Figure Drawing Co-op
The Figure Drawing Co-op is located in the Drawing studio (Art Building, Room 123) of the Macalester Art Department and runs during the academic year. This spring semester 2012, meetings are from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm every other Thursday, beginning Jan 26 and going until April 19. Sessions are open to both Macalester students and the general public. Each session has a model scheduled and the poses generally range from 2 minute warm up poses to several longer (15-45 minute) poses towards the end. There is no fee, but please bring your own art supplies. There are drawing boards and easels available in the studio.
Please respect the space by picking up after yourself. Additionally, we still welcome those who cannot make it at exactly 7 pm - either come at 8 during the break (10 minutes) or knock on the door and you will be let in between poses. Thank you for your interest, and we hope you stop by sometime!
Membership via Exco is recommended but not required - you may show up at will, and do not need to attend every session. It is more of a "come when you want" type of thing. However, this could change if we get more attendees than in the past as space in the studio is limited to about 20 people.

The Exploration of Revolutions (Political, Social, Economic, & Cultural Revolutions)
As we view world events unfold before our eyes, we are beginning to realize that the international community is in fact changing at an alarming rate. What was once considered to be fair and normal in the past is suddenly classified as immoral and barbaric in the immediate present. The revisions, transformations, and advancements that have been made in the name of modernity directly interrelate from our historical past. We often take the events of the past and apply them as lessons to support a revolutionary point of view in the immediate present. The human mind presents us with amazing power, but very few of us demonstrate a sense of appreciation for its true capabilities. Many neurologists will confirm that most of us do not even use half of our brain capacities. There are many reasons that can explain this particular reality, but the vast majority of us can agree upon the fact that the world is quickly becoming an intellectual wasteland. These “blank” periods pave the way for revolutionary change.

Figure Drawing
Drawing from a nude model is foundational for artistic training and provides a great chance for anyone interested in art making to learn more about representing the figure. Without the cultural and material layers of clothing the form and volume of the figure are most accessible and dynamic as a nude.
The evening will start with warm-up sketches then after the halftime break will be spent on two longer (20-30 min) poses. All levels of experience and all nature of media from pen to paint to play-doh are welcome and encouraged! Every Thursday, 7-9 pm.

Restoring our Relationship with Earth: Achieving Sustainability in a Resource Hungry World
This class will investigate the necessary transition towards a harmonious existence with our natural environment. To re-establish this harmony, we will discuss the implementation of ecologically based approaches as we move from a human view to an ecological view of the world where each transaction inherently restores the water, air, soil, and habitats to health and indefinite sustainability.
This course is designed to provide the information necessary to initiate a paradigm shift towards a harmonious existence with our natural environment. Topics of discussion will include presentations on Ecological Issues (6th Mass Extinction/Climate Change/Energy Descent), Political Issues (Global Discrepancy in “Wealth”/Centralized Power/Ecologically Based Economics) and Psychological Issues (Consumerism/Increases in Disorders of Modernity). From these discussions, we will investigate truly sustainable and resilient approaches to a more fulfilling and improved quality of life. Through this class, we will develop the ability to proactively implement such approaches in your community.

Character Illustration / Drawing
We are going to attempt four characters and illustrate them up.
-sketches can be made of these characters after collecting ideas in the class. The catch is to avoid copyrights as each member uses creativity to compile details as the illustration. Like a think tank.
-outfit / costume. The belongings of these illustrations could include ornaments like charms or jewelry, wears like the equipment or capabilities of the characters productivity and apparel such as the fabrics the character fashions to cloth themselves from day to day.
- we will fable the character briefly to try and inspire an understanding to the attraction and to have alongside the sketch.
Improv. - perhaps we can incorporate acting and improv at the end, to explore the characters we have created.
success may be stored on a website or become a part of this EXCO profile and will be held considerable to my developing experience of classroom facilitation; I like to imply that member participation is as functional as the facilitators curriculum.

Basic Bike Maintenance at Sibley Bike Depot (February)
This class is designed as a complete introduction to the basics of maintaining your bicycle yourself. Learning to fix your own bike can save you money, ensure access to reliable transportation, and be a rewarding personal experience to understand how your vehicle functions. Participants aren’t expected to know anything beforehand – the only thing you need to bring is your lovely selves, your bike if you want, and a creative desire to learn!
In addition to providing technical explanations and building mechanical knowledge and confidence, this class will attempt to provide a basic overview of the role of community bike shops throughout the country and world, as we work to build sustainable transportation movements locally and globally.

Investigation into the process of investigation
Investigation into investigation
This class is inspired by the Roman orator Horace's command, Sapere aude!, or, in English, Dare to know!.
The intention of this course is to study the very simple question: How do we find the information that we want? This class will ignore the questions of what information we want, or why. Instead we will focus on methods of investigation and discovery, and the troubles and gad-flies of life that accompany it.
This class, more simply, will be a group led investigation into the process of investigation itself-- a meta-investigation. While I have some ideas on the topic, I most hope to share the written or composed works of others as source material, along with what we find, together, along the way.
We will be reading the works of the late social scientist, Robert K. Merton, whose contributions to the field of phisolophy and sociology of science, and the nature of investigation itself, I believe can inform us. In particular, we will be reading from two of his books: "On The Shoulders Of Giants" ( abbrieviated OTSOG ) and "The Travels and Adventures of Serendipity". This class may also involve reference to Albert Camus, Franz Kafka, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and also whomever we happen find along the way.
I would also like to involve in this course a study of music, poetry, and fiction, in order to amplify or discredit the ideas found in our investigations of investigation. It is my intention that this portion of the class be the most collaborative; I would hope that participants of the class would share their own favorite music, poetry, and fiction about the processes of investigation.

Radical Feminisms
[[UPDATE: the class has already started, but you are welcome to join in at any time... Please see this blog for regular updates: http://excoradfeminisms.wordpress.com/ -- and email the facilitator at eli.meyerhoff@gmail.com if you'd like to join.]]
What is radical feminism today? How can we incorporate radical feminist practices in our activism and everyday lives?
This class will approach these questions through reading and discussing contemporary feminist texts (reading 20-50 pages per week), and talking about these ideas in relation to our experiences and situations. We will start with Nina Power's One Dimensional Woman, which critiques up-beat feminisms and offers a more anti-capitalist approach. Nina is a rad philosopher and the author of a cool blog: infinite th0ught. Here’s a blurb about the book:

The Godfather: Cultural Enrichment or Co-Dependence?
In other words, there are classic movies which add to our cultural
enrichment such as Joe Macbeth (starring John Garfield), and The
Godfather (starring Al Pacino). However, the co-dependence theme comes
up when we are no longer able or willing to tell our own stories. After
a hard day on the job or at school, all we wanna do is rent a movie so
that we can quote "unwind." This speaks to an intellectual laziness
which could end up helping to unravel a society which is already
unravelling.

indigenous. We will be looking at not only the Six Nations Confederacy,
but several other cultural and political powers in the western

and many others. One of the goals of this course will be to not only
push the envelope but get rid of the envelope. No discussion of our
problems or potentials is possible without our indigenous center.

A Force That Works: Nonviolent Action and Civil Disobedience
Why is the idea of force always associated with violence and aggression? There is a whole field and ideology that utilizes nonviolent action to enact change that supports social and environmental justice. This course will examine the history, theories, techniques, and effectiveness of nonviolent action and civil disobedience.
We will explore a variety of topics, movements, and skills through lecture, films, readings, speakers, and discussions. The speakers will include nonviolent activists who've engaged in civilian disobedience themselves. The course will also include training in civil disobedience and direct nonviolent action. These will hopefully include training in direct action planning, support skills, basics of blockades, and introduction to climbing techniques. Through these trainings, you will learn the strategies for effective nonviolent protests and action.
In the spirit of experiential learning, we are open to the direction of the course based on student needs and interests. The vision and hope is to educate and inspire students to use what they've learned to support their own causes and make that "change you seek in the world," (Gandhi, one of the few well-known nonviolent activists).

Sibley Bike Depot - Bicycle Trailer Building Class (February) - REGISTRATION CLOSED
Build your own bicycle trailer to haul groceries, lumber, just about anything - even a canoe!
In this class we will explore building a strong, inexpensive and beautiful bike trailer with just a couple wheels and some otherwise unused wood. There will be an emphasis on employing “appropriate technology” hand tools such as planes, hand saws, brace and bit, etc. So bring any tools you own to class and we will tune them up and explore their proper and safe use (tools will be provided as well). We will not be using any welding equipment. Within the four meetings of this class participants will be able to roll home their own new trailer!
Note: Though we will attempt to reclaim as many materials as possible, there will likely be a small materials fee, likely around $15, for the class.

Activist/Militant Research in the Twin Cities
Are you a leftist activist? Would you like to do collaborative research that helps your activism? Are you open to transforming yourself and your projects through the process of research?
If so, then this class is for you. The purpose of the class is to learn and practice what has been called ‘activist’ or ‘militant research.’ One of its contemporary practitioners, the Colectivo Situaciones from Argentina, defines it as the following:
“Militant research is a concept-tool that works on the premise that all interpretation of the world is linked to some kind of action. Related to practices of co-research and institutional analysis, militant research proposes that all new knowledge production affects and modifies the bodies and subjectivities of those who have participated. Rather than use research as a tool to categorize and separate knowledge from practice, militant research operates transversally, becoming part of the process that organizes relationships between bodies, knowledge, social practices and fields of action.” (http://www.situaciones.org/ )

Introduction to the Bible: Historical Context of Ancient Israelite Scripture
Welcome to the exciting world of the Biblical Studies! New contexts and meanings have been ascribed to the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) as the text has traveled throughout different regions, cultures and eras. Our goal in this brief introductory course will be to read the Bible within the context of the original setting and culture of its authors (i.e. the ancient Near East). This will be accomplished by employing the historical-critical method to the text. By examining several books of the Bible, particularly the Torah (Pentateuch), students will be shown how to read the text closely and think critically about the meaning of a particular text. This course is intended for anyone interested in the learning more about the Bible, in the hope that the academic knowledge that is granted only to “religious studies majors” can be shared with the larger community.
IMPORTANT!
*This course is not a “Bible study group” in the manner that many people are familiar with, concerning contemporary theological approaches to the Bible. This course will approach the Bible in an academic manner of study. Students will be presented with material that may or may not conflict with personal belief systems, and therefore must be willing to attempt to understand the information presented. Students in the class will be expected to respect various manners of biblical interpretation.
*This course is open to ALL students, regardless of religious affiliation. Though we will be reading the “Hebrew” Bible, this text is central in most denominations of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, and is a great vehicle for the academic study of religion for anyone, including atheists and agnostics.
*Prior knowledge of Hebrew or Greek is certainly NOT NECESSARY, as we will be reading the text in English.

Every week we will read and discuss short articles, chapters and zines as a group. This class is an overview of anarchist movement, ranging from historical texts and theory, to foklore to contemporary anarchist beliefs, actions, lifestyles, etc... We'll be looking at how anarchist movement is influenced by other liberation struggles around the world. We'll be studying anarchist movement in other parts of the world such as south america, europe, and asia. In the anarchist tradition, this class is participatory and slightly on the edge. If you’ve ever been curious about anarchism, this class is for you!

9/11 Conspiracy Theorists: Patriotic Citizens or Just Plain Crazy?
Citizens who question the Official Story of 9/11/01 are labeled Conspiracy Theorists and this is often the end of the discussion. That is an easy way to avoid a conversation that is uncomfortable to many. In this class, citizens are offered to take a non-political, non-emotional look at why millions of citizens of the nation and world have questioned the official story. This setting offers open discourse on the investigations that took place.
What do the conspiracy theorist know that we don't? Why do they continue to question the official explanation? Can we simply explain their opinions by calling them crazy and ignoring what they have to say? What is the 9/11 Truth Movement?
Most citizens are unaware of a third WTC building (#7) that completely collapsed even though it was not hit by a plane. This might be that it was never mentioned in a 428 page report by the 9/11 Commission even though it happened on the same day, in the same complex and in the same manner as the other two WTC buildings. Not even a paragraph about it. It also was reported collapsed by BBC and CNN prior to the collapse at 5:20 pm. Where did they get their information?

Organic Chemistry, Survival in the Twenty-first Century, and Rock 'n' Roll
This course will explore the diversity of natural and anthropogenic organic compounds as well as their molecular structure, physical properties, and biogeochemical dynamics. In lieu of standard textbooks on the subject of organic chemistry, all technical material will be contained in a series of detailed notes written by the facilitator which are to be published electronically. Each class meeting will consist of either a workshop or a field trip, and will be prefaced by facilitator-led discussions on topics such as industrialization, the environment, deciphering media jargon, and activism. The workshops will primarily consist of DIY projects which transform foraged and/or free materials into substances which meet important human needs. These projects will be designed to encourage human creativity, emphasize the importance of the scientific method, and will be necessarily tailored to the interests of the class. The field trips will be to businesses which exploit similar chemical phenomenon on a commercial scale for profit and/or the vested interests of the State. The course is not designed with the needs of aspiring professional scientists in mind, but rather with those of ordinary people who wish to better understand and respond to the world around them.

Theater of the Oppressed--Rehearsal for Reality (or Revolution!)
Are you looking for new tools to do public work on an issue that you care about? Are you looking for ways to laugh, learn, and build a public life? Do you want to be part of a broader Twin Cities community of artists and community organizers?
This spring, Ben Fink and Nickia Jensen will be introducing a class in Theatre of the Oppressed—the basic techniques, the theory behind them, and the ways we can apply them, here and now. Theatre of the Oppressed is a method of interactive theatre, developed in Brazil during the 1960s-70s as a technique of resistance against military dictatorship, and now practiced by oppressed communities around the world. It prepares people and groups for political action by using their whole bodies to explore problems and discover and rehearse new solutions. We call this a rehearsal for reality—or revolution!
The class will also infuse community organizing skills, techniques, and practices based on the teachings of the Industrial Areas Foundation and Gamaliel Foundation.
People of all levels of experience in organizing and/or theater are welcome—all you need to bring with you is something you’re passionate about and an open mind!
We will meet weekly, on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 P.M., starting February 3 and ending in late April. Location: Folwell Middle School (3611 20th Avenue South -- on 36th St., three blocks east of Cedar), room B003 (the music room, in the basement). If you’re interested in participating, or have questions, or want more information, feel free to contact the class co-facilitators.
