Marxisms of the Global South

In this course we will be examining the theories and practices of anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist thinkers and movements across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Topics we might take up include Eurocentrism as it relates to Marxism, anti-colonialism and decolonization, gender and sexuality, national and Indigenous liberation, unequal exchange, how imperialism affects class formation, the superexploitation of Global South labor in the capitalist world system, past and present struggles against capitalism in the Global South, important innovations in theory and practice these subaltern movements have realized, and the consequences these have for movements in the Global North. The overarching question for this course might be: What uses does Marxism have for those fighting for justice and liberation in the Global South, and how has it been used?

The class will be a reading and discussion group, with short (5-15 minutes) presentations before the conversation. During our first meeting we can discuss in more detail what we all wish to gain from the course and decide on future topics and readings. We will meet weekly and have great conversations!

EDIT: Hi all, we have already begin, but folks are always welcome to drop in to a meeting! We are meeting at Seward Cafe, Sundays, 12pm. Contact me (preferably a message through the EXCOTC site) if you are interested and want to know what we are reading that week!

Infant Massage

Workshop date(s) & time(s):
Repeats every week until Thu Jun 05 2014 .
Thursday, May 29, 2014 - 18:00 - 19:00
Thursday, June 5, 2014 - 18:00 - 19:00
Learn to massage your baby, providing benefits for both baby and parents.

Infant massage has been a long tradition in many cultures around the world.  Massage provides benefits to both babies and parents, and is an opportunity for bonding and communication through touch.  This workshop series provides hands-on instruction for parents to learn to massage their babies, including a special routine for addressing the symptoms of colic and gas.  We'll also learn about reading baby's physical and vocal cues to know whether they're ready for massage, and about the benefits of massage.  We'll meet twice, one hour per week, so you have time to practice between classes and bring any questions you have to the second class session.  Please plan to attend both sessions, as we'll be working on different parts of baby's body each session.

Please bring your baby to practice on!  Massage oil and handouts will be provided.  Please feel free to also bring a life-sized baby doll to practice on, in case baby isn't in the mood for massage in class.

Registration is limited to three parent/baby duos.  Additional parents may accompany their partner/baby.  No child care will be available for other children.

Facilitator's experience:
I am currently a massage therapy student at Northwestern Health Sciences University. I'll be graduating in August with over 1000 hours of training in therapeutic massage. This spring, I took a course on infant massage, and I'm currently working on completing certification in teaching infant massage. I also have teaching experience at the U of M, and in junior highs and high schools in the US and Japan.

Mental Health Medicinal Herb Garden

Partially inspired by the Icarus Project (http://theicarusproject.net/), this class aims to start a medicinal herb garden open to the public which would encourage seeking new options to navigating mental health. In addition to managing a community garden plot with a variety of helpful herbs, classes/book discussions/movie viewings generated from pooled resources will help us learn how to utilize herbs grown there, along with gaining a more comprehensive view of herbal medicine and exploring new directions in mental health. The roots of curiosity and self-education must be present in this group, as we help each other learn and break away from health being only understood or comprehensible by "professionals". We are the experts on our own experiences. Let's get our hands dirty and our minds buzzing.

This class is open to all, but please contact the facilitator with a letter of introduction so we can map our potential resources and direction.
