DIY Screenprinting with Living Proof Print Collective
This two day workshop will serve as a basic introduction to the the medium of screenprinting with a focus on do-it-yourself methods. Day 1 we will introduce the process and prepare screens for printing and day 2 we will print. Each participant will have the opportunity to create and print their own 1-color print on paper or fabric. We believe printmaking can be a medium for anyone to speak their mind and tell their stories and we want to help you do this!
We will cover basic design, emulsion, drawing directly on the screen, equipment basics, shop setup, the printing process, inks, what you can print on, and more.
We are definitely open to participant input on class structure, though we will be cramming a ton into a short period of time so it would be great to hear from you with any questions or hopes before the actual workshop begins. We will be sending out some prep materials before the workshop and we encourage you to check these out to be more prepared for class when it starts.
IMPORTANT: Due to space constraints we are limiting sign up to only 5 people. PLEASE only sign up if you can attend both days of the workshop.
We are planning to offer these again in the future so just let us know if you're interested in future workshops and we'll keep you in the loop.
Class will meet Sunday, November 13th, 1-4pm and Monday, November 14th, 7-10pm.

Figure Drawing Co-op
The Figure Drawing Co-op is located in the Drawing studio (Art Building, Room 123) of the Macalester Art Department and runs during the academic year. This spring semester 2012, meetings are from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm every other Thursday, beginning Jan 26 and going until April 19. Sessions are open to both Macalester students and the general public. Each session has a model scheduled and the poses generally range from 2 minute warm up poses to several longer (15-45 minute) poses towards the end. There is no fee, but please bring your own art supplies. There are drawing boards and easels available in the studio.
Please respect the space by picking up after yourself. Additionally, we still welcome those who cannot make it at exactly 7 pm - either come at 8 during the break (10 minutes) or knock on the door and you will be let in between poses. Thank you for your interest, and we hope you stop by sometime!
Membership via Exco is recommended but not required - you may show up at will, and do not need to attend every session. It is more of a "come when you want" type of thing. However, this could change if we get more attendees than in the past as space in the studio is limited to about 20 people.

Building an Earth Oven
I would like to organize a class to build an earth oven. I have done this before but never here in Minneapolis.
We will start with a classroom session talking about the science behind earth plaster construction and thermal mass cooking. Then we will build the oven over a series of approximately 8 sessions.
This class is early in formation. In order to make it work and do it cheaply, we will need to find:
1) somebody who has a whole lot of clay soil that we can remove from their yard
One Possible way to do this is by building a raingarden for someone. In building the rain garden we can extract lots of clay soil.
2) Find someone who owns some land nearby who would like an earth oven. Anyone?
3) Find someone with a truck who can haul clay and sand for us.
Until we find these things we will not set a date for this class. However, if you are excited about this please feel free to contact me. Lets work together to find the resources we need to make this happen. It is possible if it takes a long time figuring these logistics out we will do this class spring semester. In the meantime, lets work together to track down what we need, and maybe build that rain garden.
There is also a possibility that this class will be done in collaboration with the Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota (EJAM). They are starting a grassroots natural building campaign with North Minneapolis residents

Stuff that's tricky to do with a camera
Do you understand your camera?
I like to imagine that I do, but my camera's pretty confusing, too.
All you need to understand is shutter speed, aperture and film speed, but with all the things to shoot and ways these interact, it can be pretty tricky!
Have you ever tried to do a photo project from the internet? I've done a bunch, developing film in coffee, for instance, that's pretty easy. Long exposures with flash stencils mirages? I do okay at that, but there's a trick to it, there's certain things you have to understand to do it. We can learn together.
Come by with any concern, or try to learn how to do specific things with long exposures, which will be my focus for the summer. You do need something like an SLR to do long exposures, but I may be able to provide these if I am told of a need in advance.
Look at these fish. If you do crafts or visual art and want to know something about photography, then I have fun experiments you may appreciate.

We will have weekly classes in July and August, not including July 4th.
Mondays are field days, where we shoot and Fridays we will have an open studio for those interested in editing their photos or learning about editing or even developing film!
Open studios are Fridays, starting at 7p, and you can stay as late as 10.
You don't have to attend all the open studios or all of the field sessions! We will try to keep in touch so that we know what materials to have and whether or not to wait up for you before we take off on ADVENTURES.

The Bruce High Quality Foundation — TEACH 4 AMERIKA - A conversation on Arts Education

What is art school for? Given its exorbitant cost and the unlikelihood of art market success for most students, what should art education be? And what institutions are best suited for the task? Teach 4 Amerika: The Conversation asks local art students, creative thinkers, and arts professionals to consider these questions on the local level as the first step toward constructing a national imagination of the future of arts education.
Participants will arrive prepared to share and exchange in an open forum the ideas, methodologies, and individual histories that have informed their practice. Participants should consider:
1. Define what it means to work with or within arts education for you.
2. What would you say are the top three problems with arts education in your area today? Why?
3. Imagine the best possible educational situation for yourself. What does that look like?

Child Development and Arts Education
Involving children in creative art activities goes far beyond just being about “art for art’s sake”. This presentation will give an overview to parents and educators about how the arts affect children in their everyday life and enhances their abilities in academic performance. Stages of physical and mental growth—brain development, effect on fine motor skills, problem solving and creative thinking skills will be discussed. It will also focus on how children perceive artistic achievement and how that often differs from an adult perspective and vision of what is considered successful. The goal of this presentation is to have you walk away with useful tools and knowledge that will help you address and enhance children’s educational and creative experiences and outcomes.

Controversy to Canon: Watching Lucinda Childs' "Dance"
This workshop is offered in conjunction with the Walker Art Center’s presentation of a remount of Lucinda Childs’ 1979 piece "Dance" and the related exhibit "Sol LeWitt: 2D + 3D." A once-controversial collaboration between choreographer Lucinda Childs, visual artist Sol LeWitt, and composer Philip Glass, "Dance" has been accepted into a canon of late 20th century performance.
This workshop explores the piece’s historical and artistic context and the controversy that surrounds such work. Asking the question, “what makes a minimal aesthetic, repetition, or pedestrian movements controversial?” the workshop is designed to provide a grounding of knowledge and tools that can be used both to better understand “Dance” and to approach other work.
Using a combination of lecture, discussion, excerpts of performance films, short writing activities and a tour of the Sol LeWitt exhibit, this class is designed to offer insights to students with varying experiences with the visual and performing arts. Prior knowledge of art history or contemporary performance is not required.
________________________
Workshop date: Saturday, April 2, 2-5 p.m. This workshop is offered in conjunction with the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday, a day of free gallery access and programming held the first Saturday of every month. The Walker is also free to the public from 5-9 p.m. on Target Free Thursday Nights.
