DIY Screenprinting with Living Proof Print Collective

This two day workshop will serve as a basic introduction to the the medium of screenprinting with a focus on do-it-yourself methods. Day 1 we will introduce the process and prepare screens for printing and day 2 we will print. Each participant will have the opportunity to create and print their own 1-color print on paper or fabric. We believe printmaking can be a medium for anyone to speak their mind and tell their stories and we want to help you do this!

We will cover basic design, emulsion, drawing directly on the screen, equipment basics, shop setup, the printing process, inks, what you can print on, and more.

We are definitely open to participant input on class structure, though we will be cramming a ton into a short period of time so it would be great to hear from you with any questions or hopes before the actual workshop begins. We will be sending out some prep materials before the workshop and we encourage you to check these out to be more prepared for class when it starts.

IMPORTANT: Due to space constraints we are limiting sign up to only 5 people. PLEASE only sign up if you can attend both days of the workshop.

We are planning to offer these again in the future so just let us know if you're interested in future workshops and we'll keep you in the loop.

Class will meet Sunday, November 13th, 1-4pm and Monday, November 14th, 7-10pm.

Facilitator's experience:
Facilitators (two for each class) are all independent artists who incorporate screenprinting into their artistic practice. We believe in screenprinting as a powerful personal and political tool. We founded Living Proof Print Collective (http://wehavelivingproof.wordpress.com/) to create a space where we could create our own artwork and help provide access and resources to various community members and groups. Over the last year we have put together a screenprinting shop with capacity to teach workshops in and out of shop, and provide space for multiple practicing artists, all on a very tight budget.

Figure Drawing Co-op

The Figure Drawing Co-op is located in the Drawing studio (Art Building, Room 123) of the Macalester Art Department and runs during the academic year. This spring semester 2012, meetings are from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm every other Thursday, beginning Jan 26 and going until April 19. Sessions are open to both Macalester students and the general public. Each session has a model scheduled and the poses generally range from 2 minute warm up poses to several longer (15-45 minute) poses towards the end. There is no fee, but please bring your own art supplies. There are drawing boards and easels available in the studio.

Please respect the space by picking up after yourself. Additionally, we still welcome those who cannot make it at exactly 7 pm - either come at 8 during the break (10 minutes) or knock on the door and you will be let in between poses. Thank you for your interest, and we hope you stop by sometime!

Membership via Exco is recommended but not required - you may show up at will, and do not need to attend every session. It is more of a "come when you want" type of thing. However, this could change if we get more attendees than in the past as space in the studio is limited to about 20 people.

Building an Earth Oven

I would like to organize a class to build an earth oven. I have done this before but never here in Minneapolis.

We will start with a classroom session talking about the science behind earth plaster construction and thermal mass cooking. Then we will build the oven over a series of approximately 8 sessions.

This class is early in formation. In order to make it work and do it cheaply, we will need to find:

1) somebody who has a whole lot of clay soil that we can remove from their yard
One Possible way to do this is by building a raingarden for someone. In building the rain garden we can extract lots of clay soil.

2) Find someone who owns some land nearby who would like an earth oven. Anyone?

3) Find someone with a truck who can haul clay and sand for us.

Until we find these things we will not set a date for this class. However, if you are excited about this please feel free to contact me. Lets work together to find the resources we need to make this happen. It is possible if it takes a long time figuring these logistics out we will do this class spring semester. In the meantime, lets work together to track down what we need, and maybe build that rain garden.

There is also a possibility that this class will be done in collaboration with the Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota (EJAM). They are starting a grassroots natural building campaign with North Minneapolis residents

Stuff that's tricky to do with a camera

Do you understand your camera?

I like to imagine that I do, but my camera's pretty confusing, too.

All you need to understand is shutter speed, aperture and film speed, but with all the things to shoot and ways these interact, it can be pretty tricky!
Have you ever tried to do a photo project from the internet? I've done a bunch, developing film in coffee, for instance, that's pretty easy. Long exposures with flash stencils mirages? I do okay at that, but there's a trick to it, there's certain things you have to understand to do it. We can learn together.

Come by with any concern, or try to learn how to do specific things with long exposures, which will be my focus for the summer. You do need something like an SLR to do long exposures, but I may be able to provide these if I am told of a need in advance.

Look at these fish. If you do crafts or visual art and want to know something about photography, then I have fun experiments you may appreciate.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lotusduck/5557830464/

We will have weekly classes in July and August, not including July 4th.
Mondays are field days, where we shoot and Fridays we will have an open studio for those interested in editing their photos or learning about editing or even developing film!
Open studios are Fridays, starting at 7p, and you can stay as late as 10.
You don't have to attend all the open studios or all of the field sessions! We will try to keep in touch so that we know what materials to have and whether or not to wait up for you before we take off on ADVENTURES.

The Bruce High Quality Foundation — TEACH 4 AMERIKA - A conversation on Arts Education

Workshop date(s) & time(s):
Sunday, April 10, 2011 - 18:00 - 20:00
Part of a nationwide tour.

Rally takes place on April 9th at the University of Minnesota, This page is for the discussion, April 10th at The Soap Factory 6-8pm.  There will be a reception either before or after at a location nearby the Soap Factory where food and drinks will be provided.

Please note that space for the discussion is limited, please RSVP to this program by requesting membership in this class.  This Workshop is for the discussion on April 10th.  More information about the rally will be available soon.

What is art school for? Given its exorbitant cost and the unlikelihood of art market success for most students, what should art education be? And what institutions are best suited for the task? Teach 4 Amerika: The Conversation asks local art students, creative thinkers, and arts professionals to consider these questions on the local level as the first step toward constructing a national imagination of the future of arts education.

Participants will arrive prepared to share and exchange in an open forum the ideas, methodologies, and individual histories that have informed their practice. Participants should consider:

1. Define what it means to work with or within arts education for you.

2. What would you say are the top three problems with arts education in your area today? Why?

3. Imagine the best possible educational situation for yourself. What does that look like?

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Facilitator's experience:
In the Fall of 2009, an alternative art school opened in New York City called The Bruce High Quality Foundation University (bhqfu.org). Completely free, proudly unaccredited, BHQFU was built for and by members of the local creative community with the initiative of The Bruce High Quality Foundation and the support of Creative Time (creativetime.org) in response to the need for accessible higher education in the arts that is artist-run and artist-centered. After a surprisingly successful first year, with hundreds of students getting involved to produce a wide array of classes and public programming, the Foundation has decided to take it to the road.

Figure Drawing

Drawing from a nude model is foundational for artistic training and provides a great chance for anyone interested in art making to learn more about representing the figure. Without the cultural and material layers of clothing the form and volume of the figure are most accessible and dynamic as a nude.
The evening will start with warm-up sketches then after the halftime break will be spent on two longer (20-30 min) poses. All levels of experience and all nature of media from pen to paint to play-doh are welcome and encouraged! Every Thursday, 7-9 pm.

Child Development and Arts Education

Involving children in creative art activities goes far beyond just being about “art for art’s sake”. This presentation will give an overview to parents and educators about how the arts affect children in their everyday life and enhances their abilities in academic performance. Stages of physical and mental growth—brain development, effect on fine motor skills, problem solving and creative thinking skills will be discussed. It will also focus on how children perceive artistic achievement and how that often differs from an adult perspective and vision of what is considered successful. The goal of this presentation is to have you walk away with useful tools and knowledge that will help you address and enhance children’s educational and creative experiences and outcomes.

Controversy to Canon: Watching Lucinda Childs' "Dance"

Workshop date(s) & time(s):
Saturday, April 2, 2011 - 14:00 - 17:00
A workshop offered in conjunction with an upcoming performance of the once-controversial piece "Dance" by choreographer Lucinda Childs.

This workshop is offered in conjunction with the Walker Art Center’s presentation of a remount of Lucinda Childs’ 1979 piece "Dance" and the related exhibit "Sol LeWitt: 2D + 3D." A once-controversial collaboration between choreographer Lucinda Childs, visual artist Sol LeWitt, and composer Philip Glass, "Dance" has been accepted into a canon of late 20th century performance.

This workshop explores the piece’s historical and artistic context and the controversy that surrounds such work. Asking the question, “what makes a minimal aesthetic, repetition, or pedestrian movements controversial?” the workshop is designed to provide a grounding of knowledge and tools that can be used both to better understand “Dance” and to approach other work.

Using a combination of lecture, discussion, excerpts of performance films, short writing activities and a tour of the Sol LeWitt exhibit, this class is designed to offer insights to students with varying experiences with the visual and performing arts. Prior knowledge of art history or contemporary performance is not required.
________________________

Workshop date: Saturday, April 2, 2-5 p.m. This workshop is offered in conjunction with the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday, a day of free gallery access and programming held the first Saturday of every month. The Walker is also free to the public from 5-9 p.m. on Target Free Thursday Nights.

Students interested in delving deeper beyond the workshop are encouraged to attend the following programs:

Tuesday, April 5, 7:00 pm: Talking Dance with Lucinda Childs.
Childs joins Philip Bither, McGuire Senior Performing Arts Curator for a candid discussion of her artistic collaborations and her legacy. Walker Cinema, FREE.

Facilitator's experience:
Jessica Fiala graduated with an interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree titled “Performing Arts in the 20th Century: Theory, Context, and Practice” through the University of Minnesota in 2003. She returned to the U of MN for an interdisciplinary master’s program focused in Museum Studies and Cultural Studies, which she completed in 2008. She has since gone through the Walker Art Center’s tour guide training program and has been giving tours since 2009. She has also volunteered with the Walker’s SpeakEasy post-performance discussion series since its incarnation in 2010. I am a professional fine artist since 2002. In addition, I have taught at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, Lake Elmo Regional Art Center, The Robbin Gallery, and now privately at my own studio which I recently opened. Students that have taken my classes have achieved impressive results in a short amount of time when they apply their passion with my instruction. I have been repeatedly told by students that the instruction provides effective technical understanding and increased self confidence. Even those students who attended and practice art less actively, comment that my class has increased their enjoyment in going to museums and looking at art.

Polymathic Aesthetism (A forum and exhibition)

This class is both a forum and exhibition (everyone welcome!)

In this class we will be exploring:

A. Polymathic Aesthetisicm, a functional system for implenting ideas on a larger scale.  The aesthetic supposes that through the use of certain recontextualized metaphors such as Adam Smith's Invisible Hand and the Human web when paired with a little footwoork seemingly improbable ideas become probable, palitable, and overall doable.

B. The curation/installation of an exhibition.  We will create and hold an exhibition from conceptualizion all the way to installation.

You do not need any sort of "artistic" background or knowledge of the art to world to attend.  Polymathic Aesthetism caters to all talents and is not specific to so called "artistic talents."

(All minor art supplies are provided.)

Thanks a bunch!

Basement Screen Printing

This is a class for those of you who want to screen print, but don't have access to studio space or a ton of money. We'll be learning basic screen printing techniques that can be done in any basement or other small space, including: stretching screens, coating screens with photo emulsion, "burning" images onto the screen, and of course – screen-printing. We'll also explore and experiment with additional ways to save money and resources while screen printing.

3 years of DIY screen-printing out of my home. Most of my work has been posters and t-shirts for social justice related benefits and fundraisers. I am self-taught and have found resourceful ways to set up a low-budget functioning screen print shop. I wish to share these skills/tools to make screen-printing more accessible to those who either don't have access to a studio or don't have the money for a professional set-up.

Anti-photography photo class!

Get access to tools and cameras or just find new ways to use the ones you have!

We'll play with film, Holgas, digital cameras and photoshop. We even have some vulgar attempt at darkroom developing in the works.

I can tell you (mostly) how a camera works, but where to point it is up to you (thus, anti-photography.) Rules related to composition and image clarity will be broken in the interest of trying stuff.

Special sessions on full moons.

Some hours are listed here, but I can do by appointment to accomodate your schedule, just call!

Figure Drawing with Live Model

Drawing from a nude model is foundational for artistic training and provides a great chance for anyone interested in art making to learn more about representing the figure.  Without the cultural and material layers of clothing the form and volume of the figure are most accessible and dynamic as a nude.  The Macalester College Art Alliance has hosted professional models from the Twin Cities area for several years and is now offering weekly open sessions.  The evening will start with warm-up sketches then after the halftime break will be spent on two longer (20-30 min) poses.  All levels of experience and all nature of media from pen to paint to play-doh are welcome and encouraged!  Every Thursday, 7-9 pm.

Facilitator's experience:
I've hosted these sessions at Macalester since last spring and I've found the most important thing to do is make sure people that participants feel comfortable and aren't intimidated by the building, the artists around them, or the model. I like being able to have new folks come in who aren't necessarily art students and in the past have been able to welcome community members who have heard of us from friends and flyers. Taking Exco classes and being interested in education outside of the institution and access to and cultivation of a community's resources makes me excited that we can offer these sessions to a wider public. A series of free figure drawing sessions can be helpful for many an artist and provide a non-threatening way for people not used to drawing from a live model to get acquainted with the practice.
