Wheelbuilding at Sibley Bike Depot (January)
This class is designed as a complete introduction to the basics of wheel building. We are posting this class late, but if we have sufficient interest we will start the first class with lacing rims. The second class will entail bringing the wheel up to tension and truing it radially and laterally. It is okay if you don't understand what this means we will start at the beginning. No prior knowledge is necessary, however, it will be useful to understand the basics of truing.
We will be following Gerd Shraner's method feel free to peruse his book http://www.icelord.net/bike/ArtOfWheelbuilding.pdf
I am going to push this into January because not enough people registered in time. Please let me know if you would like to join us.

Commuting by Bicycle at Sibley Bike Depot
Whether it’s less than a mile or 15 miles to the store, school, or work, commuting by bike is fun and rewarding. Riding your bicycle for transportation is extremely empowering, good for your health and saves you money. This course will give you skills and confidence to start riding your bike in traffic and around town. This class assumes that you can get on a bike and pedal, but no further experience is required.
We’ll talk about how bikes should behave on the road and practice handling skills, like shifting and riding straight while you check behind. We will discuss what to consider when you use your bike as transportation, such as clothing, accessories and routing. Then we’ll go for a ride! The ride will take place as it starts to get dark, so please bring at least the legal nighttime requirements: a front light and rear reflector. If you do not have these items, we’ll have some for you to borrow. Helmets are required for this course, and we have a few loaners if you don’t have one. And of course…bring your bike!
The class is 2 weeks long on Sundays from 4:30-6:30
September 18th and 25th

Starting June 15 @ 5pm
This class was born out of a desire to get together people who are interested in bike touring but have been intimidated by it (the physical demands, the bike culture, whatever) and DO IT! We will go on rides around the cities, learn about bike maintenance, touring resources, make crafts, and more! The class will be shaped by the desires of the people in it, so we will decide later how far we will go, but the idea is for the class to culminate in a three day/two night bike trip in the area. We want to emphasize that this is for people of all biking backgrounds!
Our ideas for the weekly classes leading up to the trip include:
- Weekly meetings and roving group rides
- field trips to bike friendly places, such as Sibley Bicycle Depot
- Discussions on how to physically prepare for a bicycle tour
- Lesson on how to fix a flat + other bike maintenance
- Plan and map out a final three day/ two night ride.
- Learn how to make a spoke-let
We will not be able to provide bikes, so we recommend you own (or be able to borrow) a bicycle in good working condition. (We will have a basic maintenance day, so it doesn’t have to be perfect!)

Learn techniques about how to effectively ride your bike in the winter! Winter is cold but biking through the winter is doable. Learn skills to push how much you can ride in the cold weather!
Winter is also brutal on your bicycle. The roads get slippery, the bike lanes are icy, and the salt corrodes your brakes and gears. Learn some maintenance tips for keeping your bicycle running smoothly throughout the winter.
This is a THREE WEEK class; week 1 will be focused solely on commuting tips and ideas for how to ride in the winter. Weeks 2 and 3 will be about bike maintenance and some tips on how to keep your bike running smoothly and safely during the winter.
Schedule: Thursday evenings, October 22-November 5, 6:30-9:00pm.
Location

***REGISTRATION CLOSED *** Basic Bike Maintenance at Sibley Bike Depot (October)
***REGISTRATION CLOSED*** we'll offer another class in November.
This class is designed as a complete introduction to the basics of maintaining your bicycle yourself. Learning to fix your own bike can save you money, ensure access to reliable transportation, and be a rewarding personal experience to understand how your vehicle functions. You aren’t expected to know anything beforehand – the only thing you need to bring is yourself, your bike if you want, and a creative desire to learn!
Participants are encouraged to attend regularly, as each week builds upon skills and theories developed in previous sessions. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bicycle to work on; however, shop bicycles will also be available for tutorial and repair.
Class Schedule: September 13-27 - Three consecutive Sunday afternoons 4:15-6:30pm
