YOUTH ONLY: House Dance Nation

I will be providing a few of the most popular House Dance steps for beginning level students AGES:1-18years old. We will work on movements, as a workshop style and I will give time for each of you to practice and guide each student through the newly-learned step.

*House Dance Nation is a sharing space. The main purpose of House music and dance is to unite all people and make every feel comfortable to let loose and get down in an environment where all feel comfortable. We do not base our movements on judgement, as we move towards freedom.

House Dance is a style of club dancing that was created in the mid-70s after the death of disco. "House Music is Disco's Revenge" according to Frankie Knuckles, a founding creator of House Music. It is a style unique to the underground scenes of cities around the world.
The styles and movement are rarely seen in many parts of the mid-west these days, however anyone that may have had the privilege of visiting nightclubs or some of the daytime House events ~or Rituals ~ in larger cities such as New York's Coney Island Dance Party and Chicago's Smart Bar might ask themselves "what is this funky movement everyone's doing, and why haven't I seen THAT in my city?!?!" Well, now's your chance to get acquainted with what you've been missing out on... and no worries, you really haven't been missing out... While you sitting back being a wallflower, your soul has been dancing. NOW is the time to learn some new movements. No longer will your Wallflowerness exist... ~ It's Time to get down.

Description of House Dance:
The movement is comparable to break dancing, hip-hop or even ancient styles such as afro-carribean dance, yet the movement involves a lot of foot work. We will explore some movements such as, or similar to the loose legs, voguing, and the Charleston.

Body Appreciation Through Dance II

Body Appreciation Through Dance II is based on a similar class with the same name from a few summers ago. It will be studio-based contemporary and hip hop styles, focusing on core strengthening, flexibility, common dance skills and short choreography. The class is for the Intermediate-Beginner (some dance experience is highly encouraged). The course will be a six-week session, meeting Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. at the University of St. Thomas. (June 16, June 23, June 30, July 7, July 14 and July 21). Come for one class or all. Over the six weeks students should become stronger, more flexible and more confident in their dance abilities in this friendly environment.

Wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle. Dance shoes or bare feet are fine.

The exact location is the Murray-Herrick Ballroom at St. Thomas, room 304. http://webapp.stthomas.edu/CampusMaps/

Facilitator's experience:
My dance experience includes various numbers of years of dance classes and performances in jazz, modern, ballet, lyrical, tap and hip hop at a studio and at Macalester College. I've also taken ballroom lessons, with my emphasis being swing and cha-cha. I'm always interested in overall wellness, and believe that combining artistic expression and physical activity improves one's sense of self and well-being. A little more about me: I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design from St. Thomas in 2009. Besides dance, I love art, design, cooking, waterskiing and speaking French. I'm really excited about this class and can't wait to meet everyone!

Liturgical or Interpretive dance is a course that teaches spiritual emphasis
on the movements of the body as instruments of praise and worship. Liturgical
dance is a sacred dance form that has been performed in celebrations of
weddings, triumphant victories and ceremonial rituals through out history in
Israel. The dances that this course will cover however will have a more
modern day approach than the traditional Jewish dances. The dances will be
accompanied by different types of music that is spiritually uplifting and
positive in its contents .The dancers will learn to how respond with an
appropriate movement that flows out of the music. Dancers will learn a short
choreographed piece and be introduced to performing improvisational movements
as well. The dance genres that make up liturgical dance are modern, modern
jazz and some afro modern dance styles. This is an open level course and
participants are not required to have any dance experience. The class will
begin at a slow to moderate pace beginning with a warm up of floor
excercises, stretch series and charge up with some cardio exercises prior to
covering the expressive portion of the dance. Participants are asked to limit
cell phone use while in class so that optimum time can be utilized.
Participants are asked not to bring small children or observers to rehearsals
so that the learning experience may not be interrupted. comfortable and
breathable attire is suggested. jeans, mini skirts and trousers can be
restrictive to movement and flexibility. The objective of this course is to
encourage individuals who desire to express themselves through movement but
have been afraid to do so and to inspire creative movement from the heart. It
my desire that we all have fun and discover a sense of wellness in the
process !
