Writing and Performing Political Theatre

The instructor has an MFA in Theater with a playwriting emphasis and has produced social/political-minded work in San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Illinois. The class will emphasize techniques for effective character construction as the basis for creating a script, along with fundamental elements such as dramatic conflict, obstacles, and character arc. Specific in-class exercises will be used as well as homework assignments designed to generate material. Suggestions for creative use of different performance modalities and techniques will be developed through movement-based exploration in class, as well as use of video/audio resources. As the class continues each student performs his/her work-in-progress, with instructor feed-back and direction. The class culminates with a full student performance of their work.

DINNER THEATER : Exploring our edges through performance.

NOTE: THIS CLASS WILL START MARCH 11!!!!!

Fridays, 6:30 – 8:30pm

Knox Presbyterian Church: 1536 Minnehaha Ave W, St. Paul 55104

It’s Friday night. Your school week is over; you're done with mosque; or maybe you’re getting the kids ready for bed; or maybe it’s time to put on your hottest drag outfit because you’re going to the club.

But then you remember that first – it’s time for Dinner Theater. This is the moment where you come have the most delicious meal ever, with amazing people, while DIVING into performance as a way to explore vulnerability and creativity.

Woah.

This is a group to practice pushing at our limits – to jump into action, to role play, to sculpt each other, and in the process find energy and possibilities we couldn’t imagine before. We want to step into vulnerable places, confront insecurities, and tap into our brilliance, through acting out what’s fresh and at our edges.

No one’s an expert in this. We’ll be bringing some theater games and practices but we will all be teachers, spontaneously learning and experimenting together. Most of all we will bring our stories, our bodies, and our voices (whether spoken or otherwise), and play out the questions.

And the other important element: food! For participants that are able, we will invite you to contribute a meal to the class, and use our delicious dinners as motivation and another tool for exploring community with each other.

Some example questions:
Have you ever experienced pure joy?
Faced a situation that always makes your afraid?
Where do you see community struggling?
Are there histories and cultural stories we carry with us?
What would it mean to destroy the self?

Let’s practice communication, compassion, and a community consciousness while having fun

Love,
Rigo and Jason

Dramatic Long-Form Improv

Are you tired of dumb gags and silly guessing games? Sick of fart jokes and stereotypical characters? Do you think Improv theater can be something more?

The purpose of this class is to explore the potential for drama and realism Improv theater. We will progress rapidly from standard scene and character games into long-form games.

Some experience in Improv and/or theater is preferred, and a willingness to explore new improvisational ideas is a requirement.

PLEASE NOTE that the schedule listed below is rather arbitrary, we will decide as a class when and how often to meet!!!

I want to make a schedule that everyone can adhere to because I want to form a sort of troupe where we grow together and can trust each other as performers. I will wait until we have enough people to begin the class. If you have ANY questions or ideas, or want to talk about Improv, please contact me. Thanks!
