Eletronic Disturbance Theatre is in the news lately. They represent activities that include virtual sit-in ins and other forms of internet activism that truly represent the roots of the term culture jamming -- to jam radio waves (or broadcasting airwaves) -- in this case jamming internet websites. Ricardo Dominguez is in trouble now for activities that potentially stand up to government policies on immigration. Below is an email that I've received, as well as some links to articles.

It's always interesting to me that whenever I get ready to teach about something, there it is in the news! Here's some info from an email I just received today about the Guerilla Girls, which we will be talking about soon.

Yoko Ono Lennon announces Guerrilla Girls On Tour as one of the recipients
of the 2010 Courage Awards for the Arts. The Yoko Ono Lennon 2010 Courage
Awards for The Arts will be presented on Sunday 28 March 2010. Guerrilla
Girls On Tour is an anonymous touring theatre company of 26 women trained in
a variety of comedic theatre techniques who develop unique and outrageous
activist plays, performance art and street theatre. The troupe has
presented over 200 performances and workshops around the world addressing
reproductive rights, war, sex trafficking, hunger, herstory/history/hirstory
and violence against women. They will work with feminists in Slovenia on a
collaborative performance of their new play If You Can Stand the Heat: The
History of Women and Food at the City of Women Festival in October. For

As an update, we had a brief discussion last week and decided that we would watch the Chicago Conspiracy Trial when the full class was able to come, so we'll be watching it this week and then probably doing just a little bit of catch up--we may start with zines this week too.

This is a good news/bad news thing. It used to be that adbusters had a page where you could create your own spoof ads, but I can't seem to navigate to it. I suspect they've given in to market forces and now have kits and the like for activists that you can buy. I sort of have a problem with that, but I also recognize that I'd rather have them around than not, and that's what they have to do. They're still a worthwhile organization, and sometime between now and week 4 (two weeks from now), please go to their website and tool around, see if anything catches your fancy. There are a lot of cool articles, blogs, etc. there.

Culture Jamming -- having blog problems

HI all. As you can probably see I've been trying to upload files all day--literally like 3 or 4 hours--and I'm having problems with the blog function. Some are beyond my control and some are a result of the size of the files, which have a lot of graphics in them. Please write me/respond to this message and I will send you the articles for this week. I'll have copies in class too, but it'll be great if you can read them ahead of time.

If you can't come this week, you are still welcomed to come and jump in the following week, so don't let that keep you away! We're going to talk about the articles and watch about an hour of a film called Can Dialectics Break Bricks. It should be really fun!

I'm sending this to last semester's class too. If you didn't make all the sessions and want to join in again, please do!

Culture Jamming next Thursday

Hey all! Just a reminder that the culture jamming class starts next Thursday. The University is on Spring Break but we'll still be meeting. I will send out some articles by Monday--possibly sooner if I can.

I taught this class last semester and it was really fun and based on that, I've made some changes that will make it even better! I'm very excited and I hope you are, too.

If you'll be out of town for break, let me know, but we are planning on going ahead with the class.

Yes Men Movie

The new Yes Men movie is out in theatres this week and will be playing a very limited engagement (it may actually leave this Thursday). I got to hear a little bit from one of the members of the Yes Men talk about the movie and how their actions in this movie differ from their last one. Since we'll be talking about them in culture jamming, and also because this marks a departure for the Yes Men and for culture jamming in general, it would be awesome if you can go.

Welcome to culture jamming

Hi and welcome to the culture jamming class. Just to let you know, we just got our room assignment -- 430 Blegen Hall at the University of Minnesota. A few weeks before the class I'll upload some of the readings to the website, especially for the first class, so you can have a chance to look them over. This is my second time teaching it as an EXCO class and about my fifth time through the material and I'm very excited about the class. Each time I teach it is slightly different and I've added two more videos for us to watch as well as some articles.

In the meantime if you want to introduce yourself, talk about why you're taking the class, any experience you might have with culture jamming, or anything you want to talk about (related to culture jamming, of course) feel free to post here and add to the conversation!
