Greetings and Scheduling!

Good evening! I am excited about this seminar and hope we can settle on a date and time that works for most (if not all) of us.

The first order of business is for you all to email me at delo0045@umn.edu and tell me what day of the week you CAN attend a two hour seminar at Peters Hall on the St. Paul Campus. 1404 Gortner Ave.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday (I have class from 8-4:30 on Saturdays).

GReat!

Second order of business: Please think of what readings you would like to bring to read for this seminar. We can decide if we want to read at our first meeting. We do not have to read anything, but it may lend more depth to our discussion. I would suggest the following as starting points.

Hodge, D. R. (2003). Differences in worldviews between social workers and people of faith, Families in Society, 84(2), 285-295.

Furman, L D., Zahl, M.-A., Benson, P. W., & Canda, E.R. (2007). An international analysis of the role of religion and spirituality in social work practice Families in Society, 88(2), 241-254

Levi, R. (2005). Group magic: An inquiry into experiences of collective resonance, Reflections, 6(2/3), 20-27. Retrieved on August 16, 2005 from http://www.ahpweb.org/pub/perspective/february2005/feb05cover.html

I'd like to know what texts you access for inspiration in your faith and practice (Do you find significant passages in The Bible for instance). I will provide a reading to ground our discussion.

Lastly, I am no expert. I am hosting this so I may listen and learn. I am attracted to this topic for three reasons. The first is the absence of this conversation at the U and secondly because I learn from others and (thirdly) I want to strengthen my knowledge and understanding of how faith and religion inform people's lives. This latter reason is rooted in a strenghts and multi-cultural position that informs my way of being in the world. This said, I hope you bring your queries, questions, assumptions, and (jaharri window) blind spots to this process in creating the direction for this seminar.

More to come...

in faith,
