Music Recording Basics

I'd love to take a class on the basics of recording/mixing/mastering music - utilizing/placement of mics, recording equipment, basic programs digital or analog (Garage Band, Pro-tools, 4/8 tracks). A good class for indie musicians that didn't go to school for sound engineering or the like, but want to get decent quality demos on a fixed budget.

Hi, You are not the first to make this request. I currently teach the songwriting class (and people should sign up for it!) but I work as an audio engineer and would be happy to facilitate such a course. The primary obstacles are space and equipment. I am working on some leads for a space, although they seem to be more "performance" than "studio" in nature. If somebody had a studio space they were willing to open up to a class that would be awesome. The equipment issue makes getting into the specifics of any particular system/software fairly difficult, but that said, for the most part the general concepts of good audio apply universally.
The bottom line is that in the recording world each situation is unique, one does not record a heavy metal band the same way they would a folk singer, but the goal is the same: A great sounding recording that does the best possible job of representing the artist(s)' work. If bands/artists that are actively working on recordings could bring that process into the class by allowing us to conduct recording and mixing sessions, possibly in THEIR space, I think we could have an amazing learning opportunity.
There is also interest in live audio. Should this be included or should it be a different course?
