Awaken the Mantis is a series of Self Defense classes taught by
Metropolitan State University alumnus, Pete K. Wong. In this series
practitioners will gain an introduction to applying martial arts in
their everyday lives as they are provided a foundation to acquire
the necessary skills for Self Defense and self-discipline through the
means of martial arts and community building.

Martial arts is a form of expressing yourself honestly with the goal
of safety and protection for yourselves or others. This can only be
achieved through constant monitoring, experimenting, building,
and repetition of the body.

These classes are FREE and OPEN to all staff, faculty, students, and
community members of Metropolitan State University!

On Debt: An Anti-capitalist Reading Group

A reading group around issues of debt, starting with David Graeber's recent book, Debt: The First 5000 Years. Here's a blurb about the book:

Before there was money, there was debt

Every economics textbook says the same thing: Money was invented to replace onerous and complicated barter systems—to relieve ancient people from having to haul their goods to market. The problem with this version of history? There’s not a shred of evidence to support it.

Here anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom. He shows that for more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods—that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Graeber shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from Italy to China, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections. He also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancient works of law and religion (words like “guilt,” “sin,” and “redemption”) derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong. We are still fighting these battles today without knowing it.

Debt: The First 5,000 Years is a fascinating chronicle of this little known history—as well as how it has defined human history, and what it means for the credit crisis of the present day and the future of our economy.

Description: For those interested in restoring urban and abused land using native and perennial edible plants.

This workshop is for those interested in healing some of the abused landscape we find ourselves in. This healing included returning land to a state more similar to the natural landscape of northern climates while serving utility to creatures who live in the urban area, particularly those of hominid ancestry (who currently have difficulty procuring energy from plants in their immediate surroundings and/or without assistance of oil-based and oppressive technologies) as well as the many creatures displaced by humans.

The goal of this group is to appropriate abused land (such as land that has been paved over or plauged by non-native plants) using native, wild and perennial plants native to the region.

This workshop will be run using consensus decision-making and rotating facilitation (see http://anarchistu.org/Anarchistu/DiscussionOfConsensusDecisionMaking or http://www.seedsforchange.org.uk/free/resources#grp), therefore the direction and scheduling of the workshop is ultimately up to those participating (though the workshop is intended for those interested in actually tending to the land, not only talking about it).

A preliminary schedule may look like this:

Meeting 1 (Early March)
Introductions, experience with land restoration/gardening/etc., goals or mission statement for group, identify land for restoration, discussion of potential resources for plants/soil/tools/storage, plan frequency of coming meetings.

Meeting 2 (mid-March)
Debrief meeting 1, report backs, discuss and implement gathering and housing of resources.

Meeting 3 (early April)
Debrief previous meetings, layout plantings for the land, continue resource gathering

Meeting 4 (mid-April)
Debrief previous meetings, continued planting layout, begin sprouting of any plants from seed indoors, discussion of the current food system.

Learning to fix your own bike can save you money, ensure access to reliable transportation, and be a rewarding personal experience to understand how your vehicle functions. Participants aren’t expected to know anything beforehand – the only thing you need to bring is your lovely selves, your bike if you want, and a creative desire to learn!

Participants are invited to join Living Proof for a two-day workshop covering the fundamentals of screenprinting. We'll emphasize Do-It-Yourself methods so folks will be able to take their screenprinting skills out into their communities!

The first day, Sunday 1:00-4:00PM we will focus on designing images to print and exposing screens.
The next day, Monday 7:00-10:00PM we will be printing and sharing prints!

By the end of the workshop, participants will make their image into a one-color print that they can put on paper or fabric to share and post widely and wildly. We will cover print shop basics, introduce materials and alternative inking and printing processes.

Due to space limitations, we can only allow 5 participants per 2-day workshop. Please sign up only if you're sure you can attend both days.

Rhythm in the 20th Century

Rhythm in the 20th Century explores the many varieties of rhythm in popular, jazz, and classical music in the last century. Students will learn the development and characteristics of Louis Armstrong’s swing, Steve Reich’ minimalism, John Coltrane’s free jazz, Igor Stravinsky’s primitivism, Oliver Messiaen’ isorhythm, John Cage’s aleatoricism, Hip-Hop artists’ beats, and others. Class preparation will include thought provoking reading assignments and critical listening. Class sessions will include equal parts of discussion, lecture, and listening.

Music fans of all levels are invited. Course work will be oriented towards listening and discussion. Some scores will be analyzed; a basic understanding of music notation will be useful, but is certainly not required. Readings and recordings will be made available to students via the Internet or, by request, on disc.

The mission of this workshop series is to connect with our community and enhance our skills and knowledge about healthy food production and accessibility.

All workshops run from 12-2pm at the Minnehaha Free Space, 3458 Minnehaha Ave., Minneapolis MN 55406 (on the #7 bus line, near #21, #23 and light rail)

Are you interested in building more resilient, sustainable and just communities? Over three Sunday workshops, FOOD FEBRUARY will merge the theory and practice of food justice. Together, we'll grow the conversation by learning from people already getting their hands dirty in the Twin Cities. No matter if you have little experience or a lot, come to connect with others, share knowledge, and nurture community sustainability.

Each workshop will build off the others, but can also be attended individually.

February 5 – WINTER GARDENING SKILLS
Learn about winter gardening, including how to grow small herbs and microgreens and how to sprout at home. This workshop will give practical tips for building sustainability at home.

February 12 – FOOD JUSTICE THEORY
This second workshop will transition from self-sustainability to the systems that affect access to food. Join local food justice activists to converse about why our communities often lack culturally appropriate, affordable and nutritious food with which to sustain ourselves.

February 19 – ACTION!
Come to this final workshop to explore what's being done locally to put food justice theory and practice to work for solidarity, not just charity. Bradi Baker from Project Sweetie Pie, an urban gardening program for North Minneapolis youth, will share her experiences teaching about growing our own food and reconnecting with the land in a culturally appropriate way.

SAORI Weaving

Explore SAORI (Japanese Free-Style) Weaving.

One 2-hour long class.
No age and skill limitation

Students will weave on SAORI loom which is very easy to use and it's for all levels and ages.
Since everyone has a different pace when weaving, the lenghth of woven cloth varies between 10 and 70 inches depending on individual. Many people get started in a short class like this and have fun with this style of this class. Students can decide what they will do with the fabric they weave. However, I assist with ideas as well.

Earth Oven Building Practicums

Following a successful class room session on the design and construction of an earth oven, and numerous one on one meetings with people interested in building an earth oven, We will build two ovens. One will be done in April on a private residence in the Phillips neighborhood and one will be built in June on the Student Run Organic Farm on the St. Paul Campus of the U of M.

All are welcome, we will start each oven with a a discussion reviewing ideas talked about in our class last fall. The oven building will happen over a series of weekends, and you are welcome to come whenever you can, dont feel obligated to commit to the whole process. We will finish each oven with a big pizza party.

This class is designed as a complete introduction to the basics of wheel building. We are posting this class late, but if we have sufficient interest we will start the first class with lacing rims. The second class will entail bringing the wheel up to tension and truing it radially and laterally. It is okay if you don't understand what this means we will start at the beginning. No prior knowledge is necessary, however, it will be useful to understand the basics of truing.

This is far too many for any class, of course.
So we need to do some creative thinking.
There used to be an e-mail function,
which permitted EXCO facilitators to write to all interested persons.
This could have been a way of discovering the depth of commitment.
If 10% are serious enough to show up for a class,
then it will work.
But if 20% appear, we will have too many.

Becoming More Authentic: The Positive Side of Existentialism

"Games" for Facilitators, Teachers and Learners

This class is a space to share your best games!

Introductions, icebreakers, energizers, team exercises, transitions, idea generators, theatre tools... often, participants in a class, meeting or workshop just recognize them as "games." But these games have a purpose! Beside putting some much-needed fun into the work, these activities tap into learning channels that are often neglected in traditional classrooms, and can bring out the best in a group's creative energy.

Here's how this class works: I'll facilitate a couple activities to kick off the class... and then leave it up to the you and the other participants. You should bring a favorite activity and be prepared to lead the group through it. The only requirements are: 1) You think it'll be fun, 2) Other participants will be able to "take it home" and do it with another group, and 3) It can be done in 15 minutes or less (but can take longer if the group doesn't want to stop). We'll take turns sharing and learning from everyone's games, and you'll leave with a brand new set of activities for your toolbox/toy chest.

A week before the class, I'll email all registered participants a PDF with some fun activities, to get your ideas going (but the best game to bring is the one you know and you'll have the most fun with!), and with a confirmation of your registration. Then, at the first class meeting, we'll collectively decide if and when we want to make "games day" a regular occurrence, and if so, set the schedule.

I encourage other EXCO facilitators, teachers in any setting, and anyone who's ever sat through a deadly dull meeting to register for this class, steal the game ideas and use them on your own!

Complete Bicycle Overhaul at Sibley Bike Depot (January)

This intermediate class will build upon the skills taught in the Basic Bike Maintenance class and expand through overhauling an entire bicycle. It's recommended that students have taken the Basic class or have a similar beginning familiarity with bicycle repair. Participants will take apart, clean, and repack all bearing systems, including hubs, headsets, and bottom brackets. In addition, the will install new cables and housing on brakes and derailleurs as needed, and lubricate/adjust all shifting systems. In full, folks attending this class will learn how to perform a complete tune-up/overhaul of a bicycle. Participants will work with the same bike through the class, in order to see the complexities and intricacies of one specific bicycle. Note: All class participants will fix up SHOP BIKES during this class! Bikes fixed up will go into one of Sibley's many community programs designed to promote biking!

The class will be 4 Thursdays: January 5, 12, 19, & 29 from 6:30-9pm each day.

• What is the real story behind all the bad economic news?

• Why are we not richer by our burgeoning tangible wealth, instead of poorer by a snowballing financial “debt”?

• How could it be that an innocent child born in the U.S. today is already, according to the “experts,” a quarter-million dollars in “debt”? When did newborn babies borrow this money? How are they supposed to “repay” it? Is their future mortgaged before it starts? Has “original debt” replaced “original sin”?

• If every dollar in circulation is “borrowed” into existence through “loans” from private banks, where does the money to pay the “interest” come from?

• After a century of explosive growth in real economic activity, why have we not grown out of our “debt”? Is there a perverse logic built into the system that is causing us to grow into it our “debt”?

• Why in the last century have family farmers been forced off the land by financial foreclosure, or threat of foreclosure, until now those living on the farm comprise less that two-percent of the population?

• What is this “debt” burden doing in real terms to our civilization, our earth, ourselves? What is “debt” anyway? What is its effect on the psyche of generations growing up in saturation of its financial demands, ecological devastation and social disintegration?

• If I am well-educated, working hard and “playing by the rules” in the “richest country on earth,” why can I not pay my bills and/or why am I perpetually in debt?

• Has fear of financial destitution replaced fear of dying as the most dreaded eventuality in people’s lives?

• Is there hope?

These and many other monetary riddles haunt our post-modern world. Indeed, they are increasingly experienced as threatening the viability of our personal lives, the existence of civilization, and even the continuation of life on earth itself. Can we get a perspective on this? Can we turn a corner? Is there a vision on the other side?

WHAT WOULD THE WORLD PEACE FORCE DO?

DISARM THE PLANET EARTH
—ONE NATION AT A TIME

SYNOPSIS:

Warfare has been a fact of life on the planet Earth
ever since tribes of human beings were able to identify themselves
and define other groups as their enemies.

Once nation-states emerged, they often found themselves at war with one another.
But warfare is not the inevitable fate of the our species.
It should be possible to settle disputes between groups of people
without resorting to violence.
The United States of America offers a long-lasting example of
several states that have been able to live at peace with one another for 150 years.
The 50 states of the USA do not commit war against one another
because we have courts of law that settle all disputes as they arise.

The whole planet could follow this pattern:
Instead of going to war as a way of settling disputes,
the parties could submit each dispute to neutral judges,
who would give equal time to each side of the dispute
and then create a ruling that might not be liked by either
but which would be a just settlement of their differences.

As courts of law emerge for setting international disputes,
the need for national military forces diminishes.
And eventually, as our planet becomes more completely civilized,
there will be no need for national military forces at all.

The change to a disarmed world will take place one nation at a time,
beginning with those nations that have misused their military forces most obviously.

OUTLINE:

Creating a World Peace Force

Improvised Contact Between Luminous Beings

Contact improvisation, according to wikipedia, is defined as: "a dance technique in which points of physical contact provide the starting point for exploration through movement improvisation...one of the best-known and most characteristic forms of postmodern dance."

According to my friend Lisa, contact improvisation is "a bunch of [wierdos] rolling around on each other"

I would define contact as a way to develop, through exercises of physical and mental meditation, an appreciation of the sensitivity, strength, softness, familiarity and unpredictability of our bodies and, consequently, the bodies of others. I would argue that the purpose of contact is to explore the expectation which our bodies' movements and habits conform to, and find the edges of those expectations to peel away the layers that insulate us from one another.

The individual and cooperative efforts by which these exercises take place are as diverse and meaningful as the attitudes of the participants. The code of contact is that no participant is ever obligated to take part in any exercise that they are not comfortable with, and anyone may join in or step back from these exercises as they see fit. Of course, the Tao Te Ching says (paraphrased) "Opposition is growth," and thus it should be noted, that every offering that participants bring to this class will be rewarded.

This ~20 hour course is designed to provide the participants with basic first aid skills, as well as specialized skills focused on protest situations.

Skills taught are patient assessment, treatment for wounds, head/neck injuries, illnesses/allergic reactions, heat and cold concerns, chemical burns, "less lethal" weapons injuries, when to seek higher medical care, and general preparedness for changing or unpredictable situations.

Street Medicine is not only for protesters: the course is designed to empower participants to take an active role in keeping themselves and their communities healthy and safe, while reducing their dependence on industrialized medical systems that are often inaccessible or hostile to many people.

That's because Rosario always writes with voice, with attitude, with a passion that grabs the reader. Journalism prof Carrie Brown-Smith writes: "Voice doesn’t HAVE TO mean less facts or more ill-informed ranting ... there’s still hard-hitting reporting, but the person behind the story isn’t completely hidden. If anything, the biases they are trying (often to little avail) to hide are instead transparently represented to the audience and become part and parcel of their expertise rather than a liability." America has long considered itself a "classless" society, in part because of the many myths about class mobility and pulling yourself by your bootstraps. But all of those things mask the truth of class in America, which is now being recognized by the Occupy and 99% movements. Republicans call this recognition "class warfare." We will explore issues of class and how class combines with race and gender in a complex matrix of social structure.

We will use discussion, group activities, theatre, creative writing, and many other forms to explore issues of class and have genuine conversation about the unspoken values of America.

This class will listen and view poetry in performance—audio, film, and live. The Twin Cities is a hotbed for this type of poetry, and we will take advantage of this opportunity.

Performance poetry takes many forms: highly dramatic reading, spoken word, hip hop, even types of singing. All will be explored.

We will discuss and, perhaps, critique the performances. We will also bring in performance poets to help us better understand their art and the art form in general.

Finally, we will do our own writing and performing. Nobody will be asked to do something they don't feel comfortable with, but some sharing will be encouraged. If desired, a class members may receive critique from me or their classmates either in a public discussion or privately.

Occupy Support Class

This Class will combine chit chat about theories of social change with strictly practical efforts to support Occupy Minnesota activities at the Hennepin County Government Center and elsewhere. The basic deal will be that people who attend class are expected to do something helpful and practical for the cause that next week as well. Classes will focus on figuring out one easy thing that anyone can do that week while coordinating longer term and more comprehensive efforts that are generated by class participants organized into teams for that purpose.

The instructor is an adjunct professor of justice and peace studies at the University of St. Thomas, so he is experienced with both the chit-chat side and the practical side of social change efforts. The effort to accomodate academic interests will be real, but subordinate to doing practically useful things for Occupy instead of JUST chit-chat. "Never a meeting without an action" will be a representative goal adopted from WAMM (Women Against Miltary Madness). Connectivity to other peace groups in town will be natural, like especially with the Veteran's for Peace who have been very present for Occupy Minnesota.

Class will meet each Thursday evening for 1 - 2 hours to prepare whatever help for Occupy will occur that week.
