Money, Society and the Spirit: Building Monetary Consciousness (Part II)
The purpose of this class is to build the monetary consciousness based upon the discussions from our initial workshop "Money, Society and the Spirit: Becoming Conscious About Money" and "Money, Society and the Spirit: An Introduction to Becoming Conscious About Money (Part I)"
Location

Money, Society and the Spirit: An Introduction to Becoming Conscious About Money (Part I)
• What is the real story behind all the bad economic news?
• Why are we not richer by our burgeoning tangible wealth, instead of poorer by a snowballing financial “debt”?
• How could it be that an innocent child born in the U.S. today is already, according to the “experts,” a quarter-million dollars in “debt”? When did newborn babies borrow this money? How are they supposed to “repay” it? Is their future mortgaged before it starts? Has “original debt” replaced “original sin”?
• If every dollar in circulation is “borrowed” into existence through “loans” from private banks, where does the money to pay the “interest” come from?
• After a century of explosive growth in real economic activity, why have we not grown out of our “debt”? Is there a perverse logic built into the system that is causing us to grow into it our “debt”?
• Why in the last century have family farmers been forced off the land by financial foreclosure, or threat of foreclosure, until now those living on the farm comprise less that two-percent of the population?
• What is this “debt” burden doing in real terms to our civilization, our earth, ourselves? What is “debt” anyway? What is its effect on the psyche of generations growing up in saturation of its financial demands, ecological devastation and social disintegration?
• If I am well-educated, working hard and “playing by the rules” in the “richest country on earth,” why can I not pay my bills and/or why am I perpetually in debt?
• Has fear of financial destitution replaced fear of dying as the most dreaded eventuality in people’s lives?
• Is there hope?
These and many other monetary riddles haunt our post-modern world. Indeed, they are increasingly experienced as threatening the viability of our personal lives, the existence of civilization, and even the continuation of life on earth itself. Can we get a perspective on this? Can we turn a corner? Is there a vision on the other side?

World War II: A Rich Source of Metaphor for our Time
PLEASE CALL RAY IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THIS CLASS - 651-714-0288
RAY will cancel the class if he does not hear from anyone by Thursday.
At this point in US History, World War II can almost seem like it is a forgotten war. What lessons and understandings might we reach by looking back onto many of the peculiarities, ideas, and stories from the time? This class will delve further into the metaphor that Nazism and the Third Reich offers us as a means to understand the present political situation in the US and the world. Do movies enrich us culturally or have they become an addiction because we simply don't want tell our own stories anymore and worse yet we don't even want to communicate with each-other? In this effort we will be examining such classics as the Devils General, and anti-war movie from the German point-of-view made in 1955 staring Kurt Jurgens. The Godfather, a movie in part made by Italians, it is the tragedy of the American tragedy in microcosm. There will be several other classics offered in this class, such To Have and Have Not starring Humpfrey Bogart and Lauren Bacal.

Indigenous Imperative: Native Thought and its Implications for Our Future
The premise of course is that our future is not only ecological but indigenous. We will be looking at not only the Six Nations Confederacy, but several other cultural and political powers in the western hemisphere including the Hopi, the Ojibway, the Inca, the Maya, Aztecs
and many others. One of the goals of this course will be to not only push the envelope but get rid of the envelope. No discussion of our problems or potentials is possible without our indigenous center. Forget casino gambling, fry bread, pow wows, Sherman Alexie's cynical novels, and all of the other caricatures of first nations people. Rather we are going to vigorously look at the loose medicine bundle of values and cultures which evolved on this continent called sacred turtle island. We will advocate for a robust restoration of native teachings.

Figure Drawing Co-op
The Figure Drawing Co-op is located in the Drawing studio (Art Building, Room 123) of the Macalester Art Department and runs during the academic year. This spring semester 2012, meetings are from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm every other Thursday, beginning Jan 26 and going until April 19. Sessions are open to both Macalester students and the general public. Each session has a model scheduled and the poses generally range from 2 minute warm up poses to several longer (15-45 minute) poses towards the end. There is no fee, but please bring your own art supplies. There are drawing boards and easels available in the studio.
Please respect the space by picking up after yourself. Additionally, we still welcome those who cannot make it at exactly 7 pm - either come at 8 during the break (10 minutes) or knock on the door and you will be let in between poses. Thank you for your interest, and we hope you stop by sometime!
Membership via Exco is recommended but not required - you may show up at will, and do not need to attend every session. It is more of a "come when you want" type of thing. However, this could change if we get more attendees than in the past as space in the studio is limited to about 20 people.

Commuting by Bicycle at Sibley Bike Depot
Whether it’s less than a mile or 15 miles to the store, school, or work, commuting by bike is fun and rewarding. Riding your bicycle for transportation is extremely empowering, good for your health and saves you money. This course will give you skills and confidence to start riding your bike in traffic and around town. This class assumes that you can get on a bike and pedal, but no further experience is required.
We’ll talk about how bikes should behave on the road and practice handling skills, like shifting and riding straight while you check behind. We will discuss what to consider when you use your bike as transportation, such as clothing, accessories and routing. Then we’ll go for a ride! The ride will take place as it starts to get dark, so please bring at least the legal nighttime requirements: a front light and rear reflector. If you do not have these items, we’ll have some for you to borrow. Helmets are required for this course, and we have a few loaners if you don’t have one. And of course…bring your bike!
The class is 2 weeks long on Sundays from 4:30-6:30

Making websites (from scratch)
-- This class is now pretty much closed because we're far enough that it would be difficult to jump in. If you still want to join, give me a call 609-462-2535. --
These days everyone can publish content online using blogging or content management software and services such as Blogger, Wordpress or Drupal. However I'm not too interested in teaching about using software or services that are always subject to change. My goal is to empower you to understand how websites work, and to put core concepts into practice.
This course will cover (or uncover) how to make a website from the ground up!
There will be three main components:
1) Overview of how websites (and the internet) work
2) Designing your own site using photoshop
3) Coding the site using xhtml, css, and javascript
I realize that things can change, and if we want to follow a different direction that's OK with me.
No experience required for this course. If you are scared of photoshop or words like xhtml, but have always wanted to know how to design and code a website, this course is for you! Even if you have some experience, you might still learn something.
Computers will be provided. Just bring yourself!

Fatal A-Track-tion? Power, Possibilities and the Central Corridor Light Rail
Construction on the largest public works project in state history is already underway, but what future will it bring? Beyond connecting the downtowns of Minneapolis and St Paul, what will the Central Corridor Light Rail project bring to the communities it runs through? Greeted both with trepidation and excitement, this project is seen as an opportunity for transit equity and accessibility. It also is seen as an open door for gentrification to undermine the hard work of the diverse communities that have revived small business on University Ave.
This class will bring policy experts and local activists to share their perspectives on where this project comes from and where it's going. Through informal discussion, short readings, and guest speakers, we will talk about what steps are being taken to prevent displacement and instead support and connect those living along the corridor. This class will be a chance for neighbors who are directly effected by in the project to connect with the processes and struggles that are jostling to reshape the cities.
Topics will include:
The Hiawatha Line and regional transit planning
University Avenue's people and history
The Rondo Neighborhood and Interstate 94
Construction impacts on local business
Redevelopment, placemaking and gentrification

Stuff that's tricky to do with a camera
Do you understand your camera?
I like to imagine that I do, but my camera's pretty confusing, too.
All you need to understand is shutter speed, aperture and film speed, but with all the things to shoot and ways these interact, it can be pretty tricky!
Have you ever tried to do a photo project from the internet? I've done a bunch, developing film in coffee, for instance, that's pretty easy. Long exposures with flash stencils mirages? I do okay at that, but there's a trick to it, there's certain things you have to understand to do it. We can learn together.
Come by with any concern, or try to learn how to do specific things with long exposures, which will be my focus for the summer. You do need something like an SLR to do long exposures, but I may be able to provide these if I am told of a need in advance.
Look at these fish. If you do crafts or visual art and want to know something about photography, then I have fun experiments you may appreciate.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lotusduck/5557830464/
We will have weekly classes in July and August, not including July 4th.
Mondays are field days, where we shoot and Fridays we will have an open studio for those interested in editing their photos or learning about editing or even developing film!
Open studios are Fridays, starting at 7p, and you can stay as late as 10.
You don't have to attend all the open studios or all of the field sessions! We will try to keep in touch so that we know what materials to have and whether or not to wait up for you before we take off on ADVENTURES.

Adventures in Science Fiction
Thursdays 7-9pm
First class: June 9
The screenwriter Rod Serling once defined science fiction as 'the improbable made possible'. Science fiction is a rich and creative genre whose roots delve far into antiquity, and whose shoots continue on into the present day. Through an exploration of science fiction, you can gain insight not only into what direction the future of humankind is headed, but also learn much about the dreams and ambitions of the past.
My course is a media- and discussion-based project designed to uplift the imagination and explore the worlds manifested by creative minds who took the box and went far, far beyond its limits. More than a survey of science fiction though, my course will explore both the historical, social and scientific foundations of science fiction and will examine the ways in which our human experience is reflected in the alien, surreal and the fantastic.
The course will be arranged thematically, exploring such topics as the concept of the alien, science fiction as utopia or dystopia, and the landscapes and imagery of science fiction. Featured works range from poems to novels - full and excerpted - to film to works of fine art.
Approachable to learners of all types and ages, this course will push but not tear at the critical side of the mind, examining and reflecting on the beauty of this genre.

Each class will be composed chiefly of movement, with brief discussion at the end. Optional reading materials will be provided. Open to all levels.

Yup, it's that easy! It's also a lot of fun!
The objective: Truth, courage, community, confidence, clarity, creativity and calm, for the purpose of being in a more naturally vibrant flow of life. The objective is up to you really. It's my job to facilitate, inspire and guide you with great enthusiasm and skill toward your desires.
no one turned away for lack of funds.

DINNER THEATER : Exploring our edges through performance.
NOTE: THIS CLASS WILL START MARCH 11!!!!!
Fridays, 6:30 – 8:30pm
Knox Presbyterian Church: 1536 Minnehaha Ave W, St. Paul 55104
It’s Friday night. Your school week is over; you're done with mosque; or maybe you’re getting the kids ready for bed; or maybe it’s time to put on your hottest drag outfit because you’re going to the club.
But then you remember that first – it’s time for Dinner Theater. This is the moment where you come have the most delicious meal ever, with amazing people, while DIVING into performance as a way to explore vulnerability and creativity.
Woah.
This is a group to practice pushing at our limits – to jump into action, to role play, to sculpt each other, and in the process find energy and possibilities we couldn’t imagine before. We want to step into vulnerable places, confront insecurities, and tap into our brilliance, through acting out what’s fresh and at our edges.
No one’s an expert in this. We’ll be bringing some theater games and practices but we will all be teachers, spontaneously learning and experimenting together. Most of all we will bring our stories, our bodies, and our voices (whether spoken or otherwise), and play out the questions.
And the other important element: food! For participants that are able, we will invite you to contribute a meal to the class, and use our delicious dinners as motivation and another tool for exploring community with each other.
Some example questions:
Have you ever experienced pure joy?
Faced a situation that always makes your afraid?
Where do you see community struggling?
Are there histories and cultural stories we carry with us?
What would it mean to destroy the self?
Let’s practice communication, compassion, and a community consciousness while having fun
Love,
Rigo and Jason

Restoring our Relationship with Earth: Achieving Sustainability in a Resource Hungry World
This class will investigate the necessary transition towards a harmonious existence with our natural environment. To re-establish this harmony, we will discuss the implementation of ecologically based approaches as we move from a human view to an ecological view of the world where each transaction inherently restores the water, air, soil, and habitats to health and indefinite sustainability.
This course is designed to provide the information necessary to initiate a paradigm shift towards a harmonious existence with our natural environment. Topics of discussion will include presentations on Ecological Issues (6th Mass Extinction/Climate Change/Energy Descent), Political Issues (Global Discrepancy in “Wealth”/Centralized Power/Ecologically Based Economics) and Psychological Issues (Consumerism/Increases in Disorders of Modernity). From these discussions, we will investigate truly sustainable and resilient approaches to a more fulfilling and improved quality of life. Through this class, we will develop the ability to proactively implement such approaches in your community.

The Movies: Cultural Enrichment or Co-Dependence?
In other words, there are classic movies which add to our cultural
enrichment such as Joe Macbeth (starring John Garfield), and The

up when we are no longer able or willing to tell our own stories. After

that we can quote "unwind." This speaks to an intellectual laziness
which could end up helping to unravel a society which is already

DJ on WMCN Macalester College Radio
Like many college radio stations, WMCN does not limit itself to any particular genre[s]. Our programming consists of a broad spectrum of music from indepedent record labels and artists, along with a spattering of talk, news, and announcements.
Unlike most radio stations of any sort, however, WMCN is a truly freeform broadcast. We have 68+ unique weekly programs, each with its own host DJ[s] and theme. While we do select our DJs in part based on their tastes and knowledge, they determine the playlists for each broadcast of their own shows independently, with no need for approval from management and no "master list" to choose from.
Since the majority of our listeners are Macalester students, we try to provide a mix of genres proportional to their tastes, while representing as many genres as possible in the spirit of liberal arts philisophy. If you see an underrepresented genre you enjoy, do a little research on influential/innovative/independent artists in that genre, and APPLY FOR A SHOW THIS SEMESTER!
If you live near the Macalester College campus, you can pick up an application at the station (in the Basement of 30Mac) , at the Campus Center information desk, or you can find a copy online at www.macalester.edu/wmcn. Applications are due back to the station by WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH.

Yoga & Writing
We all have stories to tell, spun of a lifetime of experience, wisdom, and imagination. The wriiten word is a great tool for self-discovery, finding your voice, and creative expression. I have found writing helps me get to the heart of something on my mind, become aware of important information just below the surface of my awareness, or become conscious of a new layer of truth.
Combining yoga and a writing practice can enhance one another to activate different kinds of learning and parts of the brain. In each class I will be guiding everyone through some yoga postures, breath work, and meditation so that we can all stretch, relax, and gently open our minds and bodies to the wisdom and creativity we have within. I will be creating each yoga sequence specifically to complement the writing prompts we work on afterwards. Additionally, there will be an online forum where we can tap into our collective wisdom on the writing process, yoga philosophy as it relates to writing, and other related writing topics.

Steps Toward an Alternative Economy through Community Owned Agriculture (COA)
Saturday, March 27, 10:30 am to noon
Merriam Park Library,
1831 Marshall Ave., St. Paul
This workshop continues a discussion about the COA concept--its rationale and how to implement it. What is under consideration is the beginning of a road to a 21st-century, high-tech subsistence economy, an economy that eventually can replace jobs oriented to ‘the market’ with work meaningful to a community.
(Each workshop stands alone; no previous attendance needed)
Presenters: Wilhelm and Leslie Reindl

Workshop Community Owned Agriculture (COA)-- A Step Beyond the CSA
Community Owned Agriculture (COA)--A Step Beyond the CSA
Monday, March 15, 6:30 to 8 pm
Merriam Park Library,
1831 Marshall Ave., St. Paul
How can city folks farm in the country? What would it take to become a food producer on actual farmland, without living in the country? And why would city folks want to do this, when they can grow food at a community garden close to home, or contract with a CSA farmer, or shop at a farmer’s market?
Some reasons:
* To produce essential crops that need more acreage than the city usually provides, such as grains
* To actually own production on a long-term lease or purchase of the land
* To invest assets into real, productive property
* To become part of a group that works together based on interest and investment, without necessarily doing farm work
* To participate in a new type of land and farming reform
* To opt further out of the industrial agriculture system
* To slowly learn the essentials of farming, if desired, for future purposes
This workshop presents a new concept in farming--how to become a co-producer, with others, of food on agricultural land leased or purchased by the group. It describes the first COA effort and how to participate in it.

WMCN is looking for community DJs to broadcast alongside Macalester students! WMCN is a free-form, non-commercial, educational radio station serving Macalester College and its surrounding communities. We have unique weekly programs, each with its own host DJ[s] and theme. For more information about the station, see our website at www.macalester.edu/wmcn
If you would like to join our WMCN family, we encourage you to apply for a show explaining your idea, time availability, ect. Applications are due February 8th at 10PM. Once you have filled out the application, the staff here will do show selection and get back to you about your allotted time-slot. The "class" will consist of a training session over the weekend of February 13th and 14th. Finally, we will begin broadcasting the morning of February 15th. On a weekly basis, you will be responsible for your personal show preparation and the show itself, which you can run however you'd like (as long as it complies with the FCC, of course).
