Description: For those interested in restoring urban and abused land using native and perennial edible plants.

This workshop is for those interested in healing some of the abused landscape we find ourselves in. This healing included returning land to a state more similar to the natural landscape of northern climates while serving utility to creatures who live in the urban area, particularly those of hominid ancestry (who currently have difficulty procuring energy from plants in their immediate surroundings and/or without assistance of oil-based and oppressive technologies) as well as the many creatures displaced by humans.

The goal of this group is to appropriate abused land (such as land that has been paved over or plauged by non-native plants) using native, wild and perennial plants native to the region.

This workshop will be run using consensus decision-making and rotating facilitation (see http://anarchistu.org/Anarchistu/DiscussionOfConsensusDecisionMaking or http://www.seedsforchange.org.uk/free/resources#grp), therefore the direction and scheduling of the workshop is ultimately up to those participating (though the workshop is intended for those interested in actually tending to the land, not only talking about it).

A preliminary schedule may look like this:

Meeting 1 (Early March)
Introductions, experience with land restoration/gardening/etc., goals or mission statement for group, identify land for restoration, discussion of potential resources for plants/soil/tools/storage, plan frequency of coming meetings.

Meeting 2 (mid-March)
Debrief meeting 1, report backs, discuss and implement gathering and housing of resources.

Meeting 3 (early April)
Debrief previous meetings, layout plantings for the land, continue resource gathering

Meeting 4 (mid-April)
Debrief previous meetings, continued planting layout, begin sprouting of any plants from seed indoors, discussion of the current food system.

Meeting 5 (late April)

DIY Screenprinting with Living Proof Print Collective

Description: DIY Screenprinting

Participants are invited to join Living Proof for a two-day workshop covering the fundamentals of screenprinting. We'll emphasize Do-It-Yourself methods so folks will be able to take their screenprinting skills out into their communities!

The first day, Sunday 1:00-4:00PM we will focus on designing images to print and exposing screens.
The next day, Monday 7:00-10:00PM we will be printing and sharing prints!

By the end of the workshop, participants will make their image into a one-color print that they can put on paper or fabric to share and post widely and wildly. We will cover print shop basics, introduce materials and alternative inking and printing processes.

Due to space limitations, we can only allow 5 participants per 2-day workshop. Please sign up only if you're sure you can attend both days.

Facilitator's experience:

Living Proof is a group of young screenprinters who use the medium to increase arts access and support emerging voices in partnership with educational and activist projects in the Twin Cities. We've worked with students from middle school to 12th grade and last session facilitated our first all-ages EXCO workshop.

Rhythm in the 20th Century

Rhythm in the 20th Century explores the many varieties of rhythm in popular, jazz, and classical music in the last century. Students will learn the development and characteristics of Louis Armstrong’s swing, Steve Reich’ minimalism, John Coltrane’s free jazz, Igor Stravinsky’s primitivism, Oliver Messiaen’ isorhythm, John Cage’s aleatoricism, Hip-Hop artists’ beats, and others. Class preparation will include thought provoking reading assignments and critical listening. Class sessions will include equal parts of discussion, lecture, and listening.

Music fans of all levels are invited. Course work will be oriented towards listening and discussion. Some scores will be analyzed; a basic understanding of music notation will be useful, but is certainly not required. Readings and recordings will be made available to students via the Internet or, by request, on disc.

Whether you are just starting to homeschool your children or are just considering this option, this workshop will cover the basics and answer your specific questions about the homeschooling scene in Minnesota. We will discuss the statutory requirements, your options within those requirements, and the broad range of resources and educational philosophies that make up the homeschooling community. Bring your questions and get some answers!

I am a long time homeschooler, past board member of the MN Homeschoolers' Alliance and Independent Peabody Tester. I also give workshops at homeschool conferences and support group meetings around the state on topics related to homeschooling.
