Planning radical families
This course is for folks who care about reproductive justice and radical politics. We will talk about what makes our radical families work, and how we make decisions that support radical families--not just our own, but all forms and types of radical intentional families around the world.
The reproductive justice movement is a feminist movement to address the social and political forces that constrain family planning choices. Radical family planning is for those who are in the privileged position of being able to plan their families around the values of the reproductive justice movement.
Consider the following:
¨ Society encourages white, non-poor, and able-bodied women to have children. It discourages poor people, people of color, queer people and people with disabilities from doing so.
¨ The state forcibly takes children away from families who disproportionately happen to be poor and non-white, especially Black and Native American families.
¨ White affluent families in the United States consume more resources than any other family demographic in the world.
The purpose of this class is to create intentional community around family planning and reproductive justice, and to support radical families of all kinds. We include child-free folks, parents, and queer and intentional families of all configurations. Our discussions center around how we define family for ourselves and how we plan our families in ways that support radical politics and social justice. We share information about coparenting, doulas, natural family planning methods, single parenting in community, abortion access, adoption issues, involvement of childfree people in the lives of children, easing the burden on parents and any other information that supports fairness for families. Gourmet Vegetarian: The Diet of Sustainability
UPDATE: The Farm of Minnesota, a CSA farm run by Dan and Donna Moe, will be the source for all of the vegetables used in class. I will be exchanging time on the farm for weekly supplies. To make suggestions for produce, visit the blog called "Source Found." Beginning on September 14th, a Wednesday, the Seward Co-Op will provide a full kitchen for our use! Until then, however, a location is yet to be found.
There are a couple of preconceived notions in the world of "Haute Cuisine." One: that good food is reserved for those who can pay for it, and two: that vegetarian meals are a joke. Well, it's my purpose as a chef to turn those preconceived notions inside out, because the reality is that the best cuisine is that which uses vegetables, as flavor ingredients as well as for substance, in the most effective and dynamic manner.
As an avid vegetarian myself,as well as a cook, I am creating this course to show people the true diversity of edible plant life in this world, and how to turn this plethora of delicious ingredients into something creative, dynamic and flavorful as well as satisfying and nutritious. Most of all though, I am creating this class to encourage the adoption of the most sustainable, healthy, and palatable diet known to man: ovo-lacto vegetarianism. We will, however, cover many aspects of the vegan diet as well as raw vegan dishes. Bottom line, this class will teach people how to create food that is as organic as it gets, prepared from scratch, and "good" in two ways. "Good" in the sense of extremely tasty, as well as "Good" in the sense of good for the environment, diversity, and life on this planet.

Yoga and Creativity: A yoga practice followed by an optional creativity exercise
The Benefits of a Yoga Practice:
-Reduces stress
-Relaxing and energizing
-Creates bodymind awareness
-Strength and flexibility
-Conscious breathing and stretching gives a sense of calm and wellbeing
-Creates receptivity to the imagination, insight, and creative ideas
Goals for the Class:
In each class I will be guiding everyone through an hour of yoga postures, breath work, and meditation so that we can all get a workout, stretch, relax, and gently open our minds and bodies to the wisdom and creativity we have within.
Afterwards, I plan on sticking around to work on something creative such as writing poetry, painting, collaging, etc. Anyone else is welcome to stay and work on their art as well, though this is certainly not a requirement. I will have some optional creative prompts to get you started and you are welcome to share your own ideas as well. This will be very informal and sort of an experiment of working on creative projects in a group to see how we can inspire one another or learn about our unique creative processes. I am open to ideas on this.
The time will be on Tuesdays 7:00-8:00pm at Powderhorn Park. We’ll meet on the south side of the park. Outdoors near 35th Street in the block between 14th and 15th Ave S. If it's raining we'll meet in the rec center. Email me if you have any questions!

Postcolonial Yoga
This is a class that will focus on yoga as a practice that has the potential to benefit the body and mind, rather than a practice that transports us out of a capitalist economy and into to an Eastern fantasy of purity and escape. At the same time, this class will try to position the practice of yoga within a historical framework that spans from its inception as a facet of a larger South Asian tradition to its appropriation by the West as a bourgeois pastime. Each class will be composed chiefly of movement, with brief discussion at the end. Optional reading materials will be provided. Open to all levels.

Fierce Light Yoga
Wednesdays, July 20 - Aug 17
Location: Powderhorn Park Rec Center
Inspired by the documentary film FIERCE LIGHT: When Spirit Meets Action, this class will explore ways to ground, center and power yourself as an activist/revolutionary/artist/member of a burgeoning movement towards global peace and abundance. We'll work with yoga, mind-body centering practices, powerful breath work, energy clearing and guided meditation. Learn ways to release feelings of isolation and smallness and begin to live by creative power. If there's interest, we'll practice using creative expression (writing, art, song) to channel inner light into transformative action in your community, movement, family, ecosystem.
Beginners and experienced yoga students both more than welcome, AND please don't feel that you need to already be an 'activist' to benefit from the class... if you feel drawn towards greater engagement with the present moment, want to root down into your passion and power, to find your cause and your stake in our gorgeous hungry tenuous world, come on down to Fierce Light Yoga!
Please bring a yoga mat and a blanket (if you can...if not let me know and I'll find an extra mat/blanket for you).
"We never thought it could get this bad, but we never imagined it could be this good. That the human could display such incredible creativity and connectivity and ingenuity as is happening now in this movement that has no name, in this great turning." -Joanna Macy

Omulu Capoeira Guanabara
Our student organization is a collection of students from diverse backgrounds that learn and practice the Afro-Brazilian art of Capoeira. Capoeira is an art that combines martial arts, dance, and culture, and provides an environment for people to develop themselves physically as well as mentally and emotionally.
Omulu Capoeira Guanabara is an international partnership that has two headquarters. One is based in the United States, in directed by world-renowned Mestre Preguiça, a student of the famed Mestre Bimba. The other headquarters is based in Sweden, led by Mestre Di Mola. The two function as one, and provide one of the world's largest networks of affiliated capoeira academies, with branches in Brazil, the U.S., Canada, Sweden, Venezuela, Mexico, and Japan.
Many new students often want to know what to expect during their first class. Our classes our geared towards students of all training and fitness levels, as well as to individuals of all different body types, age, and sex. We strive to create an all-inclusive atmosphere where each student can both contribute to the group and benefit from it. Many capoeira alumni describe how their experience in class betters them physically, emotionally, and mentally.
A typical class will begin with a warm-up, a series of stretches that include important postures in capoeira, practice with capoeira movements, and finally class will generally end with a roda (pronounced ho-da). In the roda, students will use to movements practiced early in class to play the game of capoeira with a partner. We also play instruments and sing songs traditional to capoeira during this part of the class. For capoeira class, it is best to wear loose-fitting clothing such as a t-shirt and sweatpants or yoga pants. Students will go barefoot in class. Uniforms are available for purchase, but new students are encouraged to come in their own work-out clothes during their first few classes.

Radical Sex Education
This class aims to examine the aspects of why sex education is important and what it can offer to us in our daily lives. This class will create a forum that looks at what we can gain from learning and teaching sex education in a radical environment outside of the mainstream, public education arena of the "abstinence only" method. This class is geared towards adolescents and young adults that are inundated with messages from mainstream society and in the media about what is expected of them, their bodies and their sexuality. We will have bi-weekly discussions that will be held in a safe, comfortable and open environment to explore ideas, thoughts and questions on different topics. Each discussion topic will have its own set of ground rules on how to keep our class space safe, inviting and inclusive of everyone involved. General topics for discussion will include:
*Sexual anatomy: Knowledge on puberty, menstruation, and masturbation
*Learning to construct our sexual identities: What does it mean to be queer, trans, gay, lesbian, bi, bi-curious, androgynous and/or heterosexual? What does it mean to have a certain gender? How can we be better allies towards one another when we acknowledge that different gender and sexual identities exist?
*Safe sex: Knowledge on contraceptives and sexual health for male, female, trans and queer bodies -- where can we find free clinics in the Twin Cities? Where can we find free contraceptives and free condoms?
*Consent is sexy: How do we talk about consent? How can we have responsible intimate relationships with one another? Are there different kinds of relationships?
*Sex in different cultures: What can we learn about our sexual relationships from other people?
*Sex and kink in the media: What relationships do we normalize? What different kinds of sexual relationships do we find attractive? How can we look at pornographic images and analyze them in terms of healthy and unhealthy sexual relationships?

Beginning Meditation and Mindfulness for Activists
"We can never obtain peace in the world if we neglect the inner world and don't make peace with ourselves. World peace must develop out of inner peace."
Mindfulness can simply be defined as being fully in the present moment and fully accepting anything that happens, just simply observing everything as it occurs. Within the larger concept of 'mindfulness' there are methods such as meditation, yoga, qigong, tai chi and others that help focus an individual more fully on the present moment.
My goal in this course is to help you to be happier and more peaceful by facilitating your own learning of these methods and you will be able to practice these methods quite easily on your own after even coming to one of these classes.
Meditation has been getting a lot of press in recent years thanks to recent advancements in brain imaging that has shown scientifically that meditation, yoga, qigong and other ancient practices have concrete, positive results for a person's health. Various benefits include greater calmness, lowered blood pressure, lowered stress levels, increased ability to concentrate and others (If you Google Scholar 'meditation' and 'Jon Kabat-Zinn' or 'Richard Davidson' you can get a whole list of research articles). The best way to learn about these benefits, though, is through first-hand experience.
Meditation and other practices are very effective ways to self-heal and find inner peace. Mindfulness is compatible with any belief or non-belief system, so whatever your belief or non-beliefs are, these practices can help you in relieving stress, having greater calmness, etc...which is pretty cool :)
There is a lot of activist work to be done in the world today with so much happening and taking care of ourselves is something we might be tempted to neglect. Yet the more at peace we are with ourselves and what is going on inside of us, the more effective and greater attention we can give toward improving the world outside ourselves.

I envision this as a pretty casual workshop/running group that would follow the couch-5k training program together, share struggles and successes, and perhaps run a race, if the participants are interested. I am no expert, but I do have some resources and experience to share about the nuts and bolts of running and will likely have various "new runner" friends come by to share their stories and run with us. I think this workshop would be the best fit for woman-identified people ages 16 and up, but will certainly not turn anyone away. For maximum benefit, sign up with a buddy who lives in your neighborhood! Come to first class dressed in comfortable clothing, and the best athletic shoes you have. Have a light dinner or snack and a glass of water about an hour before. bring a water bottle if you like, but there are fountains in the park. Yoga & Writing
We all have stories to tell, spun of a lifetime of experience, wisdom, and imagination. The wriiten word is a great tool for self-discovery, finding your voice, and creative expression. I have found writing helps me get to the heart of something on my mind, become aware of important information just below the surface of my awareness, or become conscious of a new layer of truth.
Combining yoga and a writing practice can enhance one another to activate different kinds of learning and parts of the brain. In each class I will be guiding everyone through some yoga postures, breath work, and meditation so that we can all stretch, relax, and gently open our minds and bodies to the wisdom and creativity we have within. I will be creating each yoga sequence specifically to complement the writing prompts we work on afterwards. Additionally, there will be an online forum where we can tap into our collective wisdom on the writing process, yoga philosophy as it relates to writing, and other related writing topics.

Mindful Eating
Do you eat most meals in under 10 minutes? Do you eat without any awareness
of taste and texture? Are you ready to gain consciousness at the dinner
table?
Our society is hyper-focused on food and yet we barely pay attention to what
we are eating - finding ourselves at the computer, watching television,
driving or talking on the phone - barely concentrating on the pleasures and
of food and the sensations of eating. We leave many meals feeling unsatisfied
because we barely remember eating anything at all.
Here is your opportunity to slow down and become mindful of eating. This is
your chance to release all the negative thoughts, emotions and beliefs you've
had about food.
October 19&26 - We will experience mindful eating in the classroom with
foods the instructor brings in. Please also bring your dinner to class.

Harmony, Yoga Systems and Mind Control from “Bhagavad Gita
Title of Course: Harmony, Yoga Systems and Mind Control from “Bhagavad Gita”
Facilitator: Sai
Email: tvd108@gmail.com Phone:
Class Time: 11.00 – 12.30 PM
Class Dates: June27, July 11, July 18, July 25
Place: Ford Hall 155 (U of M Campus, East Bank)
Course description:
Lack of Harmony in the nature causes disturbance in the natural cycle. Lack of harmony in the human mind and heart creates disturbance and fear. This internal confusion can cause us to lose track of mental, physical, social stability and ultimately lose faith in the things we belived in as truth. Is it imperative that we have to go through these periods or is it just the propaganda we are forced to accept because we never questioned ourselves deep enough?
Most of the situations in our lives we accept change through external factors or by some hypnotic experiences, but often we end up where we start, if not worse. The solution to all that causes disturbance, fear, anxiety, uneasy stress cannot be one of external change but one of internal change which will keep us at equilibrium at all times and accept things in a natural way. This change is achieved through change in consciousness.
From the pages of Bhagavad-Gita we will learn how this ancient but ever fresh scientific knowledge reveals things seemingly sophisticated but yet applicable in every sense. We will also learn different yoga systems and art of mind control.
Some words of Praise on the wisdom of Bhagavad Gita:
"The Bhagavad-Gita is the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of endowing value to mankind. It is one of the most clear and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy ever revealed; hence its enduring value is subject not only to India but to all of humanity." ~ Aldous Huxley

Course description: This is a course in what makes us human, an exploration of the self from a biological and psychological perspective. In academia, a disconnect often emerges between the poetic “higher-level” aspects of humanity (notions of “self”,“emotion”, and concepts like “love”) and the underlying “lower-level” aspects of humanity that comprise our biology. The course will feature a lower-level scientific discussion of the nervous system as well as a higher level narrative of what makes us human in relation to our neurobiology. The objective is to approach the subject of human behavior comprehensively and integratively. For lower-level content we’ll use resources from the internet mixed with short topical lectures and group discussion. For higher-level content we’ll use the book “A General Theory of Love” by Lewis, Amini, and Lannon, as our textbook. Each student will need a copy to read outside of class -- we will have several copies to loan out, but students are highly encouraged to check out or purchase their own copies.
